laminitis now abscess 2

We are all good - silver is lame again though. Waiting for trimmer to come on Monday to look at her feet. I wonder if it's lami - though it's the same regardless of surface and seems to be one leg. If its lami I will try some prascend for cushings I think (she is hairy as a yak, seems run down and a touch miserable and drinking a lot). Blood tests were negative but vet reluctant to retest (as am I!!!) due to stress it causes her (and us haha). Of its not feet then I suspect shoulder so will get osteo out for her. I'm paranoid all her skin stuff is flaring up - we had allthis last winter in the same pattern. It could be coincidence and the influence of cushings... I just don't know.
 
Hiall, what a wonderful day here - sunny - going up to the field shortly armed with bridle for Acorn - start of getting him back into work mode, give him something to think about other than trouble!

Tess & Acorn are both fine, Charlie is still recovering fro his injury, Bonfire night set him back was doing well and then 2 days ago we had a shoot go through next field they normally tell us - we always leave them out and when all fit no problems other than an initial run around - they then just stand and watch - Charlie has tweaked his injury - he was seperate a couple of small paddocks away from the other and has obviously panicked a bit - if we had know we would have moved him next to the other for the day = ah well it is what it is!

sorry to hear about llyw with his tooth - is it a temporary tooth - if so they may take it out or just file it if it needs it.

Poor Alf (and you) 2 weeks box rest - it will go quickly - hope heals well.

That time of year again for Sil - you must dread it coming around PFB.
Lets hope its not lammi - maybe abcess?do keep us updated and fingers crossed for you this end that its just a blip

We have rain forcast for next week - dark and wet - not looking forward to that! have rough trimmed all their tails this morning - all touching ground so don't want no accidents stepping back on them in wet, we don't take much off just enough to do the job.

Manes and tails all gone through today - whats left of tess's mane as she has decided she prefers to sport half of one - good job shes retired from showing!

anyway best go and get ready to do short stuff b4 dark = speak soon

Hi all - hows Sil doing?

we are having a bit of a time with Charlie - he was not good on Sunday on leg , Vet decided he was to stay out , moving up to the yard may do more harm than staying where he is - not too bad on Monday, this morning off again but not too bad - tonight he was on 3 legs - if it wasn't for knowing hes recovering from his injury - my gut is saying the foot has abcessed - rang vet and he said to double bute - see how he is in the morning and go from there - from what is going on he says 1 of 2 things - aggrevated his injury or abcess - we managed to semi pick out that foot - there is some heat - abit of puffiness and an odour and he was more inclined to put foot down after that - min'st doging his front leg striking out in protest at getting near the foot was a bit of a nightmare - can't feel any swelling or heat in fetlock,cannon or hock - so its pointing to foot at moment - abcess tbh is a better outcome than injury back so just hoping there is a burst on the morning so we can deal with it - we can soak and arrange for farrier to him - more of a chance of him getting near that back foot than the vet!

will see what morning brings - other two are fine - weather is foggy so :poop:
for having to deal with crap in field.

Hope Charlie is more comfortable by the morning, love him, any news on Silver?

Had the vet out to Alf earlier to have dressing changed.....was waiting for a telling off as he has been going out after being soooo stressed out in the stable, his bandage was getting torn and soggy in the stable so decided he might as well come out and at least have some company and sanity! So sporting a rather fetching looking bag and tape hes been out.......it has come loose on occassions or he has stomped on the ground and torn through it but so far so good no sign of infection and the vet is happy for me to continue in the way we have and let him out......phew....(would have done anyway:wink:) He will be bandaged for at least another 3 weeks but will suffer no lasting damage which is a relief....so off to search the internet for gaffer tape, lots and lots of gaffer tape.....

Hi, Glad Alf is progressing well, still not seen any updates on Sil - hope I haven't missed a thread anywhere.......

Charlie was marginally more comfortable this morning, but picking out that foot is a no-no - hes lashing out at the touch - we have been able to check the leg and nothing really out of the ordinary to us - have updated Vet this morning and they are coming out today - armed with sedative as they will need it if they are going to get near his back end...... they may want him in but we can't move him on the road from one end of the village to the other without knowing what we are dealing with as don't want to make matters worse, boxing him up will be a no no - he has just nicely got over his trailer issues last thing we need is to have him relating Trailer to Pain!
Don't have a time yet but Claire will ring me as soon as hes been, if vet okays moving him up to the yard then I have okayed time off work to go and assist, will be a long job state hes in and will have to be done before Dark.
If they decide hes to stay at the field and it is an abcess that could be fun and games - can't sedate him everytime need to change a poultice, ijust hoping its nothing serious with the joint or foot - an abcess I can deal with.
 
Well what a :poop:day!

Charlie has an abcess and it has burst - its the better of what could have been wrong, the vet is happy with his leg in so far as not re-injured just needs to strengthen - then comes the saga - this is 3.00pm - we give him calmer cos trying to tub his foot a nightmare - vet gave up and left instructions - the usual tub twice a day and poultice - yeah this is the pony he just spent 1/2 hr conving to pick foot up long enough to clean out and see abcess - so 3.20pm we attempt to pick out and poultice - 3.45 after being lashed out at , dragged and all 3 of us getting nowhere ring vets - come through and get sedative - 1/2 hr later and armed with ACP given his dosage - 40 mins later we reattempt by this time its dark, Torchlight - Claire still carrying her neck injury and my useless back and a pony who shows no sign of being sedated - stll adament no-one but no-one is going at his foot - on vets advice he gets another sedative dose and we wait another 40 mins - we have for all of about 1 minute signs it might of worked- droopy eyelids and a lot of tail swishing - then he flicked his self presevation lightswitch and back to bolshy self (can't blame him felling much the same myself) - we enlist help of friend who is not carrying any injury or horse owner back who comes up and spends an hour - :wavespin:Claire at head me with torch and friend with hoof pick - then semi sucess - foot picked out and purple spray on - still no bloody poultice but by this time all of us have had enough - so we have now moved to Plan F - he is going up to the yard in the morning - hoping thwalk will knock out some mud - we can then revert to tie ring and lunge rein method which mean even I can hold him and Claire can work on that leg - we aim to pick out, hose and purple spray as a minumum and then put him in for the day - that has its own issues but he will have company over the way with another on box rest - he will be onconcrete,rubber matting and small shavings bed so abcess can drain - tommorrow night with the benefit of yard lighting we will try for Plan G - a Poultice - but not hoolding my breath - if this don't work vet says we can try a nerve block injection - oh yeah..... think hes off with the fairies Charlie has been fine all through his injury with hoof picking so it is obviously pain related - if we can get some draining and relief then hopefully we can get on top of this -I am now shattered - my back is killing me - so its ibuprofen and off to bed for me -will let you know how we get on tommorrow- Vets parting shot was - he 's a fiesty one - remind us why we have ponies ?
 
Morning all, a little update on Charlie and his abcess........

A more positive morning - Plan F was sucessful and achieved with minimum fuss, Claire managed to pick all 4 out with him tied up working quietly on her own, purple spray on bad hoof, he is now in and left happily munching on his hay- he walked down from the field really well and it only took an extra 5 minutes, only a couple of stops.

So tonight he will be walked out on concrete, feet picked out again and this time hopefully a milton wash and a wet poultice pad on if its achievable without stress otherwise we will hit it with the purple spray again.

Hes much more chilled out when he is worked on a one to one basis - so we are going that route.

its going to be much easier to keep clean this way until we have the poultice going on with acceptance rather than fighting it.
 
Hell Lemme it's a wonder you haven't gone totally insane by now with so much going wrong. Hopefully this dratted abscess will clear quite quickly & the poor little man will be getting a bit of peace.
Do hope that one day this thread will be redundant & all ponies ok ( though doesn't seem likely does it ? ).All ok this end , pony is losing weight & is now down to 411 kilos,was putting on so has been on a diet not a happy boy :biggrin:

Thanks - think it has gone beyond Sanity now - we have had one injury/illness free week since middle of May! what with one and the other of them, both ponies finishing off with Abcesses -

Good news on the weight loss - can imagine how happy he is:wink:
 
Well we are moving in the right direction - Charlie is walking out well now -
well enough to rear, buck and spin - after 24 hours stabled with walks out!
this morning - he has had all 4 picked out and hosed/brushed out - daughter is there now hopefully applying a poultice - he is much better when worked with by her - as soon as you get a few he worries and becomes un-co-operative - if we can get one on - then it will be changed in the morning and he will go out in the top paddock - its sandy in there so with out cover on the foot not happy to put him in it - think it would be worse than mud!
Once the foot has been drained and we are happy then it will be packed and he will be shipped back up to his field with the others - we do not want him in too long.

Clare says he is loving the cold hosing on his foot - so something good coming out of this - should have no problems with feet and water now.

Just enjoy it and don't tempt fate! well latest update is he has had his foot hosed and brushed and cleaned, milton fluid sprayed on , allowed to dry, poultice still a no-no but will happilly have the purple spray on - so hes back in his stable again. we will try a Poultice again tonight - really need to get one on if we can so he can go out as suspect another day or so and he is going to be a bit OTT on the old energy...... bute was reduced this morning, so if hes okay tonight then it will be reduced again - no pulse of heat in the leg and foot itself is quite cool now - so hopefully its draining nicely, it burst so it will have expelled quite a bit of crap at that point.... keeping an eye out round the coronet just in case we get a secondary erruption there - if we do tbh it will be easier to put a dressing on to draw it

other two are fine , out on the hill and enjoying this mild weather......

Definitely do not want to tempt fate but winter seems to be our best time so going to enjoy not fussing for a couple of months. She'll be back to being her usual demanding self come springtime!
What a brave lad he is being. battled one absess and that was enough for me. fingers crossed for him to be sound before too long

Charlie is going back up to the field tomorrow, enforced - Acorn is displaying LGL symptoms - no heat, pulse , crest etc but is definate not happy on his front, could be another abcess brewing what with th constant changes in bloody weather, but he is to come down in the morning and Charlie go up to keep Tess Company - would have preferred to do the swap this morning but the roads are sheet glass with ice so have had to leave him out - little beggar has been limboing under the electric fence or charging his way through it onto longer grass - hes rugged due to his muscles getting cold and stiffness so he has now realised the fence poses no threat to him what so ever! so hes to come down to the yard so I can get on top of him. fingers crossed for no ice in the morning........ I left him muching hay so I am hoping thats acted as a bit of a detox - toes crossed hes not got into the big field during the day - otherwise a waste of time leaving the hay - everything crossed hes still stood up when I get back and nothing else goes wrong between now and morning.:stomp:

hi all hope every body well fingers crossed for the little man, hows charlie doing? with moving house and back went on me havent had time to come on here :cry: all ok with llwy, his eye is fine but now hes lost the sight poor little man. but dosent bother him at all. and eye is clear so all is good. :biggrin: am getting to new small i small ponys :biggrin: going to try and get them before christmas if weather is ok got to go down hamshire to pick them up will upload some pics .. girly is called crunchie (baby llwy) and (baby bobs) is called santana. fallabella llwy will love them. i no i wanted a bigger horse but just fell in love with these two. they share a stable . may even have a baby bella ?????? or if hes anythink like llwy was with b*lls they will go.......

going to check on all horses as the windy here tonite are up to 65mps and the rain !!!! so am wrapping up .

What great pics, they look little darlings! Glad Llyw is okay, how is he coping with the lack of sight on that eye, has he adapted ok?

Well we swapped Charlie and Acorn over this morning, Charlie is in his element getting back out and him and Tess evidently had a couple of run ins just while she put him back in his place........ hopefully all okay tonight - they have been shooting today but usually they are fine and Charlie is fit again just the abcess hole to sort out - but hes been much better out on it past few days and is allowing his back feet to be picked up again (just) so back on right track.

Acorn is back down at the stable, put him in, with the shooting the yard are all in today so he has Company next door and seemed happy enough when I left him, hes a little bit off on one foot but no obvious signs of anything - hes had bute so will see how he is tonight...... he can go out in the top paddock tomorrow but he won't be happy on his own, Farrier is here at the weekend so once hes done if he okay he can go back out to the field. I am hoping its just his feet needing the farrier, you know how he goes, either way he has to keep moving but being in on a night means I can control his grass intake little sod - he just won't stay where he is put at moment.

weather sunny but cold here, the wind is getting up - we had lots of rain overnight and more to come - Yuk! Fields getting a bit churned up in gate ways and where Tess ploughs her path - just keep moving electric around to take them off it, we have 2 acres of grass to open up yet, but have to be so careful with all of them and weight! Tess has a barrell but is not rugged so once the cold spell starts she has something to sustain her, Charlie is good but has not been on grass for a few weeks so we will be careful with what he gets at first.

lin llwy copying so well if you didnt no you couldnt tell anythink was wrong, all his got is a white spot in the corner of his eye. but whats been happin the girl on the yard is great but not as carefull as we are with him putting him out and if you dont watch him as he comes out of his stable hes walked into his door when shes put him out for me . she trying to fit him and her throw the door which you just can not do. so then he come off worse. so i make sure no body puts in out or in now. but with the other horses hes fine. bless him, just got him new stable rug today so hes all snug as a bug. little man.

how come charlie, got a abcess, saying that bloody weather wet windy and now the mud :stomp: with there is a lot of big horses where llwy is the mud is so bad. and his legs and the shetlands legs are so bad when they come in. llwy not bad ive got him on shaving but the rest on straw. so legs are clean in mornin .

hi all

hope eveybodys keeping well, and all hooves are safe . nothing to report this end all good with llwy. hes hating going out in the morning in the mud and cold. but hes doing great .
