laminitis now abscess 2

I am going to ask a silly question here...are absesses common after lami? If you remember , Rosie my cob had a bout of lami in March (x rays fine and bloods for ems neg)) back out at grass and has been since in a muzzle 24 / 7 and strip grazed.

She had been back in work about 6 weeks (light and on soft ground) when on 20th July she went hopping lame, I thought she had a broken leg! Vet came out and immediately found an absess and dug a hole. I hot poulticed and it oozed for a few days. I kept it covered for another week or so. Last Sunday I took the tape off and just used the hoof putty. I was however worried as it looked like it was coming out...sticking to everything but the hoof and alot of muck around hole. I pereservered, rode her. She has remained living out thoughout (has copd so has to)

On Thursday, she went lame in trot as we were riding just on that side of the absess, sound on the other side.
Last night, she was lame trotting across field on that same foot.
I cold poultices last night and this morning there was more puss. I hot poulticed this morning and tubbed it.

Is this normal? Another absess in whitre line area after Lami? Do I just kepp hole covered for now? why is she scaring me so much? Can the wet weather make it worse ? (vet said every other call was an absess). I am a nervous wreck at the best of times!

Also, she has been on restricted grazing since the attack and in a muzzle, has lost weight and looking good. The longer grass at back of field is now looking lifeless...is this safer than new shoots???? I have let them have a little as my shetland was very loose and the longer stuff has dried him up niceley. Is this better for them?

soooo confused!!!! novice lami person here and never had absesses before either!:help:
 
As it's only 5 mths since she had lami I think I would be very careful as once they've had it once they are more liable to get it again & she's not very far at all down the road. Yes after they have a lami attack it's quite common for them to abscess & of course it can take a while for the blessed things to go ie keep rearing their ugly heads again
 
Yes - unfortunately - Charlie has had 6 abcesses in the last 12 months - both fronts bcessed twice in short sucession and the backs where it started under ran - it has taken 9 months for the backs to recover fully and the fronts will be another 4 months minimum - this is with 3 weeky remedial trimming - he has just gone onto 4 weekly now - Acorn had abcessing on and on off after his lammi episodes - his feet are now rock hard but is on 4 weekly trim to maintain them - he has been sound for 2 years now - when it gets wet the soles tend to soften quicker so we are careful on roadwork and in pasture where we have thorn hedging to avoid penetration, both barefoot, we used boots initially on Acorn he does not need them now. We pack ours with cotton wool and stockholme tar - messy but very effective, the poulticing and hot tubbing softens the sole - we only ever warm tub now for that reason and only for a max of 10 minutes each time. Keretex hoof hardener is brilliant if the soles are soft.
there are many differing views re grass length - we keep ours on restricted paddocks - they are not muzzled - the fructans in stressed areas can be a risk - although if we put them in the long stuff then the weight piles on - we do rotate and strip graze so we can manage and they get a maintence feed x 2 a day with lammiprone - its finding what works and its trial and error and juggling till you get it right - sure you will - can't promise you won't go grey in the process though!

Paranoid now.....have I caused her to absess????? Muzzle never comes off but I am losing sleep and have been since!

MIne is muzzled constantly, feel cruel n scared to take it off and I am almost grey already lol

kat1 No it's not cruel what would be cruel would be allowing her to down with lami again.Mine is in a minute pocket handkerchief & he is not out without a muzzle,this is 7yrs down the road from the lami attack which the vet said was only mild lami ( God help me if it was bad then as pony was sweating & in a lot of pain ). I always think it's kinder to go out with a muzzle on than have to spend the whole time in a stable so mine is in at night & out during the day with muzzle on. Sadly neurosis is part of our lives once they've had lami, we've had no hay for a few weeks now & I've been giving mine the small bag hi fibre haylage which he's been fine with. Last week Y/O sold us one of his & I changed over taking a few days to do so & d**n me if my boy has gone a bit footy on me after the weekend on new haylage aaaaaarrrgh!!!!!!!!!!!. He's going back on the small bag stuff again even if it does bankrupt me at least he'll have feet, oddly enough there are no sign at all of raised pulses .
 
I think a lot depends on triggers, ours was not grass related but I treat it as if was - better safe than sorry - we haven't muzzled as we are lucky enough to be able to dicate our grass useage to ensure they maintain weight which is what we are doing - its also poor quality hill grazing and we do not fertalize - understanding farmer. But Tubby is right its a minefield and Muzzles play a big part for many laminitics so don't feel cruel, my farrier came last week and someone he knows had some do gooder take muzzles off and let 2 lammi prones into longer grass - both had to be shot!
 
Hi all hope all ponys are doing well, llwy fine got new mum and foal, on yard and llwy loves the foal new foal is 12 weeks old, and same height as llwy but llwy loves him and so good with him will put a pic of him, on later

Hi Tracey - great to hear from you and that Llwy is well - we have had an up and down time with Charlie and is feet - 8 Abcesses in total in 12 months but we are getting there - back out in the field now. Tess has come up lame last night - looks like a knock injury so seperated her and on bute for a couple of days - not ruled out abcess but will see. Acorn and Nuts are fine - show on Sunday and Emma done good - 2 1sts 1 x2nd and a 5th - Acorn is coming good now with his manners and ridden and Nuts is just a joy - we are out again at the weekend all been well - just fun showing which means no presure and they can just go out and enjoy it and see what comes - Emm knows showing means you don't always get a ribbon but its good when you do.

We have tons of grass still so managing them all closely - we have dry and sunny for week now - flies back again a right pain.

8 Abcesses in total in 12 months WOW poor charlie so no how you feel been throw that with bobs, poor little man sorry not read all the mesages is this throw lammi or some other problem with his hooves? so glad acorn is doing well that little man been throw so much as well, love your pics little face says it all bless her x

put new pics of spud up with his mum bella shes TB 17hh hes alittle babe hes only 9 weeks i think i said 12 but bad news before the little foal ran away from mum in paddock and got caught on a tree oh lin ill post the pic hes so in a bad way, branch went into his chest vet been out well you can see by the pic. had to bring llwy in he was going mad because of baby being hirt so all ponys are in. ill post pic now

Pony's feet seem a lot better now we are back on last year's hay from local farmer,he's walking out with nice long strides now so I will take a few breaths while able :wink: Goodness if people realised how difficult it is to supply the pony/horse with the right conditions to stay sound they wouldn't be leaving their ponies/horses out on unlimited grass :banghead:. Sadly they just count on it being ok & I can see in a couple of cases that the poor horse is going shorter & slower so even if they don't go down with it this autumn next spring is almost certain to cause it :banghead:

Lovely pics - when I saw the stitching I couldn't work out who it was - Llwy is Charlies colour so worked out it wasn't him - is there any muscle damage?

ditto - I have 30 plus bales of last years up at the farm saved - this years won't be fed until next year - I think for some its a case of ignorance or it won't happen to mE!

Vet had to stitch some muscle but fingers crossed all will be ok x llwy is so like Charlie but Charlie in shape llwy just round going ack to stables at 8 to check on him so I'll get some new pic of him xx

mum and baby should have staying in for two weeks but with mum not getting any glass not doing much for her milk, so made him and mum an area for the two of them so at least there both out of harms way but mum getting grass baby looking so much better bless him.

had bad news this mornin dont no if you remember was looking after mare last year on are yard she was 25 lovely black cob shes was so sweet owner taken her back home told her last year she had lammi no one taken it on board, she was taken home put in a 3 acre paddock and yes few weeks ago it hit full lammi poor girl got put to sleep y-day :( there was talk she was coming back to the yard and i would have looked after her she was old lady but so cute R.I.P WENDY :( XX

Good news Mum and babe doing okay and on the up - sad about the Mare- it is so fustrating that people do not fully understand Lammi and management-RIP Wendy
