Coronavirus

I was thinking about the holidays/self isolation thing earlier and wondering about the implications for employers. I don't suppose your employer can stop you from taking your annual leave where you want, but if you do go to a high-risk area would they want you back in the office? Or if you self isolated could they insist you came into work? I suppose they can refuse to pay you for period you're in isolation, but if you contract the virus are you still entitled to sick pay?

Could have huge implications, especially in hospitals and other care facilities if half your staff are tagging another 2 weeks isolation onto their leave.

I must admit that I would be hugely teeed off if I was her employer. They have cancelled a major event they were holding in London later in march, and have imposed a cross company travel ban. so she is going off on a 3 day jaunt to Luxemburg and then is going to be in self imposed and unnecessary self isolation and expecting to be paid in full for something that is avoidable

Well I’m even more worried now, just seen in the news that certain drugs are going to become scarce, already being ‘at risk’ the thought of not being able to get erythromycin worries me as it’s the only antibiotic I can take, I have just ordered a repeat prescription but that will only give me two week cover :(

I don't think the Person jaunting off KNOWING the risks SHOULD GET ANY PAY.
I would be livid if i was her employer.
Another question ..... can you terminate that person for just cause and say have a great time at the festival.

I also heard some drugs may be in short supply.

Now this scenario... Someone in New Hampshire In official quarrentine broke
Quarrentine to go to an event she just
Bloody well WANTED TO GO TO.

Now the race is on to contact EVERYONE
That was there.

Supposedly there are criminal raminifications to this but the damage is done.

Mandatory self quarrentine realistically can't and won't work.

She was found out... How many others
Have popped off to WALMART or God knows where thinking oh no big deal
No one will know.

It really makes me so mad.
AND SCARED

Bodshi... thats an even scarier thought
Employers INSISTING you come to work.

WE get a free gazette paper every Tues.
A travel agency had a big ad touting
Trips to Italy :eek::eek: yesterday.

I doubt the timeline for ads is more than a week ahead.
WHAT ARE THEY THINKING...:mad:o_O

Nothing yet has been said about the Boston marathon coming up not that far off..

Crowds are so bad for that a large company I worked for along the route closed because
Trying to get to work would have been
A horror show.

Sadly there will be people doing this.
The I don't care about anyone but myself.
She may not get back so easily with reduced flights.

Hopefully more and more events will be cancelled or postponed.

The Boston Seafood Festival ...
Supposedly the largest in North America
has just been postponed. GOOD ;)

THIS CORONA goes far beyond people saying I'm personally gonna stay away.
Venues are starting to smarten up... thank god
The ramifications are far reaching.

As I said somewhere it will impact everyone in someway or another.

But the plan is reliant on personal responsibility, some people just don't care about how their behaviour impacts others. If you are the vulnerable person, hearing someone say well I don't care if I get I will be fine, knowing you probably won't be, I don't have words for.

Different slant on this. But I do wonder what effect this will have on people's mental health.
Two doctors surgeries have closed for two weeks, that's a good 1000 people if not more not being seen /given phone appointments possibly.
Stressed.

As everything hits the news and social media, I can't see people wanting to book a holiday to places that are confirmed.

Yes I think apart from mental health that people need treatment for on a regular basis, what about the people with ocd like me? It's pushed me into over drive with all this talk of hand washing. I am bad enough as it is and suffer quite badly at times (when other things are stressing me it's an outlet).

I actually think it's being blown out of proportion by the media, events and flights are being cancelled because the clients are cancelling not because the organisers feel some moral obligation to cancel. I don't see why you are expected to continue to go to work and expose yourself yet you should put your personal life on hold just in case, lucky for you if you don't have to work and go out in public every day but a lot of us have no choice.

I have 2 work related trips coming up and will be going on both unless the government advises they are in risk areas, if we all suddenly don't go out of our houses/don't go to work then the economy will grind to a halt, and getting stuff mail order is no better as it's still being delivered to your door! and won't happen if no one is working anyway. Some are more immediately effected than others on a financial front, but if we all just hide at home then gradually everyone will be effected.

I will follow the governments advise, I will avoid known problem areas, self isolate if I feel at all unwell or if I am in under 6ft proximity of a confirmed carrier for over 15 minutes.

You each have to take precautions appropriate to yourself, that is personal responsibility, if we modify our own actions to consider everyone around us, how are we meant to decide how far that extends, those we live with?, people we have contact with regularly?, everyone in your street? everyone in your town?, what do you do pick the most vulnerable and make sure your actions don't cause ANY threat to their health? that is completely unrealistic.

I see where you are coming from @Jessey, but I still can't help thinking there is much more to this than the powers that be are letting on.
I don't ever remember swine flu, bird flu, Ebola, SARS etc causing this much chaos in the past, I certainly don't remember seeing 'isolation pods' outside our local cottage hospital but we've got them now??

There was plenty of hype over all of those, but it's forgotten pretty quickly too. I don't think there were isolation pods before but think they have been brought out after lessons learned from the previous (albeit less infectious) coronavirus outbreaks.

@Jessey I agree.

While this virus is easily spread it needs to be remembered that for the majority of people it isn't life threatening, it's no Ebola. I seem to recall there was a lot of fuss about swine flu and bird flu in the media too, and to a lesser extent SARS. Yes how this is spreading is worrying, but with less media coverage I wonder how many of the identified cases wouldn't have been recognised and reported?
