2023 Hacking and Riding

Here is a link.
We can eat it, but I am leaving it for her to enjoy.

Oh Alexanders! Yes I know that plant. It doesn't grow around here alas, I believe it is delicious, but I've seen a lot of it down your way. Thanks!

Yes it's coastal.
I did wonder if I could learn how to dry it and send it to people. Like they do nettle.
If you've got anywhere damp it seems to grow in those little sheltered spots.

We had an in hand walk this morning just down the road and back. We had to deal with about 30 walkers coming towards us who were all walking together and each one had a dog. Must have been some special doggy walk gathering. Fortunately most were on leads and those that werent soon put them on. Dogs barking when they saw horses. Horses never batted an eyelid as we all passed one another.

Billy is still being disrespectful trying to full speed walk ahead of me.. Only managed 2 walk outs this week, last week we did 5 days. I thought we were getting somewhere at the end of last week but this week he has needed reminding. I made a concerted effort taking the whip with me each time. As soon as he got in front he got tap tap tap on the chest, and made to back up. By the end of the week i barely put whip it infront of his chest and waved it if he got ahead of me and he went straight into reverse or stopped. He also learmed to walk at my pace which i did vary but i wanted to remind him what a slow walk was. It definately clicked and i was really happy with the progress in such a short time.
But this week hes forgotten what slow is. I hate having a whip with me because billy is scared of it but its the only thing that he understands and respects. I feel like two steps forward, one back. It was my fault really i let him keep walking ahead on the walk out instead of taking that whip with me and nipping the habit in the bud.

Mine can forget her manners.
My biggest one is her just snatching grass when we lead out. In an ideal world I wouldn't have to lead her through a field of rested grass to get out, but there it is!
So on go the side reins and I keep walking, maybe giving her a flick with the whip.
She only ever thinks of going in front of me when she's worried.

Robins fav ever field is open. I’m not sure why this field is so much fun. Maybe because it usually has sheep or growing hay so we don’t get in much. It makes a nice 30mins or so loop which is lovely. Some hills to go up and we can loop round the fields or go straight, so nicely interesting.

He however decided that he needed to practise his canter transitions 50 billion times. He is terribly polite in that he always comes back immediately when I say no. He just then asks again 3 steps later. We passed another livery and they could see us as they went back up the road. Comment when we got back was that Robin looked very happy and keen and were we meant to be trotting or cantering?? It depends on who you were asking really! Anyway he had a great time and was a very happy boy. He is now all clean and plaited for our big outing tomorrow. We have chatted. He is allowed one spook spin. But this has to be before the bell and he is not allowed to dump me 😂

We had a little hack today, just an hour for us both to recover from our exertions at the polework clinic yesterday. Mostly walk, but a few trots and one little canter. Sid felt quite slow, but then so did I!

When we got back I decided to leave his rug off as it is much milder this week and he could really do with a chance to get dirty. I got all ready to film him rolling - and he wouldn't roll, just ate his haynet. Typical!

Hurray its all thawed out :) I had nobody to ride with this week, so Thursday and Friday were a hack round our closest bridleway. On Saturday we set up a square of raised poles in the school 10 feet one way and 12 the other and we had a play over that (bouncing it in canter)
Sunday was a longer hack on my own.

Must try harder with pics!!!

I think we did about three and half miles.
We went exploring through the golf course tracks and then over the dunes.
She was happy to rest at the bench! I will take a drink and treat next time as the benches could be rest stops.
She managed to trip over her own hooves as she was busy watching the golf, though she is upset with the buggy.
Chilly enough out there today so a decent walk kept me warm.

We started slow today, but once we were up the hill Sid was happy to speed up a bit. We went to the new little ring of jumpies in the woods beyond Kilnhanger and popped one about 60cm I guess, he actually had to jump. Then we went for a series of little tiny ones and Sid decided I needed to learn what happens if a horse ducks out, so he ducked out of the first one. Probably my fault as there wasn't a lot of impulsion going on. Tut tut. I represented and we popped that one and trotted all the others (they are little).

After that he had cheered right up and we had some nice long trots and then what should have been a gorgeous canter except that he took fright at a fallen tree (rolleyes) and leaped leftwards off the path. I was right out of the saddle, seemingly suspended in mid air, and I have no idea at all how I stayed on except that my adductors are a bit sore. Anyway, I stayed on, and we carried on with some more nice canters along the way.

He seems to have mostly got over his fear of the deer in the deer park, except he still gives at least one dragon snort whenever he sees them.

he was very sweaty when we got home. I felt bad and left his rug off so he could roll, but when I looked out of the window to check him a few minutes ago he was standing in his snooze spot looking clean. Mind you, that's only one side.
