Coronavirus

I just wish people would be sensible and not do unnecessary trips. But it's a real world and everyone is entitled to do their own thing. If it were left to me I'd re organise it somewhat.

Exactly. I think unnecessary trips, particularly to some places, is plain irresponsible and wish that travel to them was banned - for once the nanny state could actually be useful. Someone at the yard is going on holiday to northern Italy at the weekend . . .

This shocks me, why would anyone travel to Northern Italy and put themselves at risk? Bonkers, I know I wouldn’t be getting on a plane anywhere just now.

That’s the trouble though Trewsers, there are lots of selfish people who think it’s won’t happen to me’ until it does and by that point chances are they will have already passed it on to many other people in the process.

And yet they are still thinking of going?

If I was a parent my child certainly wouldn't be going, and if the trip goes ahead I'd be keeping my child out of school for at least a fortnight after the trip had been returned. If they then tried to fine me I'd refuse to pay and make full use of the media to explain why. That's really crazy.

I spoke to a guy yesterday, already paid for his holiday so of course he's still going to go. I do have sympathy for him, if he cancels he gets none of the money back and he's worked very hard for it. Chances of him catching or spreading it are very low as he's not going to an at risk country. It's a very difficult situation and hard to say everyone should just stop this and that. But at the same time maybe they should I've no idea.

If there's money to be made it will be made by someone regardless of risk to life, hence why cigarettes are still a thing. (Off topic)

But it's all about the money as usual with things like this. The government are probably afraid it will cause trouble for many companies money wise and so they aren't doing the dramatic thing advice wise. If they did it might not take such a hold. As it stands - well, by the summer it will be rife if the reports are to be believed. I think it's more of a worry if you have a family member at risk of normal flu (which I do). Your guy that is going away and won't get his money back - well yes it's a shame for him, and he's not going to an at risk country, but who knows......could there be people at the airport harbouring it that have just stepped off a flight from an at risk place?! I don't know - it's difficult. Maybe I would think differently if I were younger and into travelling.

We were booked to go to Portugal in early May, we’ve cancelled, yes we’ve lost the money and yes we both work hard for it, BUT, I won’t risk either mine or Mr KR’s life for the sake of losing some money, when you get to our age you start to realise you are not immortal and what time you have here is worth much more than cold hard cash.
I can and do understand that some people may think that I’m worrying for no good reason, I appreciate I could die in a car crash on my way home from work, but those are calculated risks, coronavirus is far too big a risk for either of us to take lightly and as others have said, who knows who you’ll be standing next too in an airport terminal or where they have just returned from. Not to mention being stranded on lock down in a hotel somewhere with potentially someone in the next room who has it, look how fast it travelled through the cruise ship that was quarantined in Japan, over 600 people tested positive for it after about a week of close contact with each other. No thanks.

I am booked on a flight in July - only to the Uk but hugely important to me personally as I catch up with my brothers and attend my niece's wedding AND get to meet some very good friends I have made with NR past members. But to be honest, if this thing continues to escalate, and I fear it will, then I will just have to cancel. Not just worried for myself but would never forgive myself if I inadvertently became responsible for spreading it to other people. Worrying times for sure :(

I wanted to go south and see my mum at some point, but I doubt if I'll do that this year now. I know what you mean - even if it's just a uk flight. I could go by boat but that could be just as risky.

At least some folks are taking it a bit seriously, two of my conferences have cancelled now, one yesterday one today so that's a nice bit of this month's income gone.
Do you supply the conference or hold it.
You may not need to issuing refunds depending on what is in the contracts.

Just wanted to add that my colleague is mid 60s so I don't think it's an age thing haha. It's just easy to be detached from it all especially when you're still hearing adverts every 2 seconds on the radio advertising holidays you can win. Makes it all seem like we are going to be fine and yet in the media you read ' human race will be halved' or things along that jist. If the powers that be really cared about 'us' then everything would already be restricted surely? Or the government guidance would be more than just catch your sneezes in tissues and wash your hands alot. It's just all so confusing!

@Ale I honestly think that it's one of those things that you will either think is media hype or will think hmmm maybe it could be bad and by travelling I not only put myself at risk, I also potentially put anyone else who comes into contact with me at risk. I'm fairly robust health wise, I very rarely get ill, despite my lowered immunity, however, this coronavirus scares me, I can't explain why, it just does, the last pandemic was it bird flu? never bothered me at all, I never worried about it and thankfully I never caught it despite being in close contact with someone who was hospitalised with it. But yes this has me feeling concerned.

I read that some of the shops have run out of antibac gel. Are people panic buying or just being sensible.

Yup, they have run out in ASDA this morning, panic buying or not Im glad people are actually taking this seriously. Apparently dettol sales have gone through the roof too.
