Coronavirus

I agree Ale. Flu causes a lot of illness and deaths every year despite vaccines, the cynic in me thinks the reason we aren't given advice to self isolate etc is that it would cause havoc to the economy every year and that's a bigger issue.

The risks probably are low given I understand the virus doesn't live for long outside the body (or that's what scientists currently think, it may change)

I agree with both these things above.
You don't get told to self isolate with the flu because the vulnerable groups are offered the vaccine, there are over the counter things to take to ease symptoms and you probably feel so utterly utterly rubbish you don't go out anyway /common sense tells you to stay away from the young, elderly, sick.
You likely know you have the flu, people are not necessarily showing symptoms of this new strain.

Science is learning as it goes. It's as much in the dark as the rest of us.

I don't fancy being sent to London or Liverpool with a police escorts guards outside for two weeks. I can't say what it's like because I only have my horror films to go by, so I am no use there.

Yes horror films indeed! I know it sounds funny but I have a lot of zombie dreams   :oops:o_O
I am going to be having even more if this virus thing gets going nearby.

What would worry me about being in quarantine as a group is that if one person develops it then surely the quarantine should start all over again and could end up being a lengthy period. If I had to quarantine I'd far rather do it at home.
That's why I wouldn't be flying anywhere. Our country would probably want to make sure that another country has been thorough.
Didn't the people on that ship go into quarantine on arrival back here?

I must be weird, cheese late at night helps me sleep!
Me too!

I'm travelling for work, after a year's work I'm not cancelling unless they advise it (they are normally over cautious) but I have double checked my travel insurance and work cover just in case the worst happens and we get stuck.

My husband's employer has just put a ban on all work travel between countries, quite a big deal for a multinational company.

We just lost a big contract last night, did a lot of work for a conference which we were due to supply products to and now cancelled. This is only the start. We will probably go bust as all our work is meetings and events, so a rerun of London Olympics where we did no business for 6 weeks as no one in their right minds held any events in the uK at that time. So the farmers will bleat and get compensation all the time but the rest of us, just take it on the chin as ever.

I really hope it has less of an impact than you are thinking it may, what a stressful time for you :(

I agree, I think it would cause chaos if we were told to self-isolate with flu - so many people would self-isolate for a cold or a sneeze. Not just the economy either - I work in a hospital and staff are offered and actively encouraged (ie offered a small bribe) to have the annual flu jab. This isn't just to protect patients, it's to ensure that staff are still available to work if we have a flu outbreak. Last thing we need is a load of poorly patients and no staff to care for them.

Not all farmers get compensation. Why do you think there is such a high suicide rate in the farming industry. There are many that are poor and in debt.
I think this whole virus thing if it carries on spreading is going to have a knock on effect for most international trade.
The reports of cases ive heard seem to be the likes of people of people going on there holidays that are spreading it. Maybe we should stop traveling to different countries for holidays for a bit.

I totally agree on the travel, why can’t people just stop until it dies down?

I agree that there should be travel restrictions if we want to contain it, however I think that is a bit like shutting the stable after the horse has bolted, unless we close every single country right now there is no way to stop this spreading and given what the closure of China for business plus the threat to the airlines who have already been hit hard by being unable to fly in and out of countries has already done to the global economy I doubt that will happen, it would be global economic suicide.

We still have people abroad who will be returning.
Then they bring it with them. Pass it potentially onto others, then we see those popping up overseas in a few days time.
One person took it Tenerife from Italy, but there will be cases pop up after this.
