Coronavirus

I believe for it to be an effective hand sanitizer against a virus it needs to be at least 60% alcohol, I don't know about rubbing alcohol or surgical spirit but I think that rules out anything a sane person would drink. And most stuff on the yard would be antibacterial and/or antifungal so again no use against a virus, better sticking to soap and water to destroy the protective fatty barrier on the virus.

I would have thought on a smaller island community like that you would be pretty safe up there Frances. Not so obviously - Jaysus can't believe that anyone would be so damned irresponsible

and so it reaches Shetland. Three cases. Two of whom promptly went to a large local venue to a gig!

FFS, why?
Wow.
This is why it's spreading. Italy managed to contain it initially too the North at least.

One problem is that no-one can travel to Shetland, and other island communities of course, without mixing closely with people. We can’t just shut ourselves in a car and drive home (and then self-isolate if appropriate). We have to go by ferry or plane.

I am lucky where I live as it would be very easy to self-isolate should that become necessary.

We are now operating split offices at work (so one team in for a week, deep clean the office and team B in for a week ...) and I'm now working from home until further notice (I've been told Easter will be the earliest I'm allowed back).

On a purely selfish note, it's handy timing as we are looking to get a rescue dog in the next few weeks!

That's called looking for the positives.
I am still looking, will let you know when I find one. ;)

Also, @OwnedbyChanter what do you expect people to do?

My boyfriend is on the lung transplant list, he has somewhere between 20%-25% lung function, grows his own bacteria in his lungs, can't digest any food without tablets and is on over 100 tablets a day - many of these tablets, he has to take with specific good to ensure the fat or protein ratio. He has to eat approximately 1,500 calories extra than the average person. He does hours of medical treatment a day. To top it all off - he's 37 years old and was 'supposed' to live until he was 2 years old at the most.

A common cold could kill him. The coronovirus certainly could. We rely on people allowing us to self isolate and keep themselves away from us when they have a cold. So yes, I'm rather keen other people self isolate when required.

Every Flu season, we have to ensure we have enough food, medication and whatever else we need to ride out someone close to us having a common cold (including a lot of hand wash and anti bacterial gel) - so yes, we're taking extra precautions this year.

P.S He also doesn't look ill or otherwise vulnerable and is encouraged to be as independent and active as possible so you'd have no idea by just looking at him either.

Petes mum...
The worry of this must be overwhelming.
The morons that don't self quareentine properly put so many at risk.
There is a special place in HELL
for them.

Rhode island just declared a state of emergency.
It was .mostly so people could get disability benefits immediately if they have to quarrentine or care for someone
In quarantine.
NOTHING WAS SAID about stopping venues that are spreading it.

The Boston mayor says hes not there yet
Stopping at risk venues...
The Biogen Conference there Has had multiple cases and more every day.
How much more does it have to bite him in the As...... to wake these people up.
Maybe when their families are affected...

wow hang on and back off all of you. I typed a full reply today but didn’t post as I wanted to make sure it was at the right level and tone but this is out of order.

I refuse to let you take my Comments and use them in this way.

Take the nhs and government advice but do not use my comments as a way of saying I am putting peoples life and your oh at risk because I am carry on my life as before.

Some of you are reacting like I have the virus and are running around the county kissing and hugging every person in sight with no regard to other people. I did not say that.

As for my job not being irreverent well if we enforce lock down the police do not have the man power to enforce it as with every emergency we as in the military are called in.

Next time you see a helicopter dropping in sand bags lifting people and saving lives that is us and yes after 17 years service and yes dear !!! I do know what I signed up for (4 war zones over two years away from home) no I don’t want your thanks I have a medal for that, I signed for Queen and country and those in it and will carry on doing so even for people like you who think my attitude dismissive,

Don’t patronise me with your ‘stand easy’ comments you gave no idea what I have seen or lost.

I'm not really sure how my post is out of order? And I refuse to let you take my post and twist my words, too.

At no time did I say *you* directly were putting vulnerable people at risk. But the comment you made a few pages back that people ought to carry on as normal without panicking, is fine to an extent for most people. But, there will be people who dont fit into that category - we are an example of how we cant just carry on as normal and why we cant just rely on isolating ourselves. Whether we like it or not, we are reliant on people considering others and not just 'keep calm and carry on' regardless. I was just sharing my experience and our realities, which is what I believe a forum is for. Generally, most people are understanding and supportive of our extra needs and a bit of extra consideration goes a long way.

I've no idea what 'stand easy' comment you are referring to. I certainly cant see the comment you are referring to in my reply you've quoted. I'm also confused as to where I've commented on the events you've seen? For what it's worth, you also, have no idea what I've witnessed in life or I've lost.

I genuinely wish you the best of luck in your military future and your next posting. I have the friends in the military, it's an admirable and brave vocation.

@OwnedbyChanter nor did I say any of this coronavirus was your fault, nor did I personally blame you for it.
I did say your job is not in anyway a comparison because in this instance it isn’t. The point I was and am making is that while you and all your fellow members of the armed forces do a fantastic job and I have every respect for that, you made that life choice, you signed up for it knowing all the risks and all the hardships and all the loss you would face? Coronavirus and it’s potential to put those at risk in hospital or a grave is not a choice for us, we haven’t been given the choice of wether we get it or not, die from it or not, ergo, no comparison.

Can I just say, congratulation to your employers, what a forward thinking company and sensible enough to take precautions now to protect their valuable staff.

I wish my husband employers were so sensible, huge global car manufacturer, there are over 7,000 people in his office who travel globally day in day out, he could quite feasibly work from home, will they allow it, nope, following government guidelines don’t ya know. :(

Congrats on the new addition too :)

I really do think we ALL need to do what we can, when we can, to protect the whole nation and perhaps the world. Not just now but always. We should always have the greater good at the back of our minds. Without each other we are nothing really. And this is coming from someone who doesn't really like many other people.
