2016.... Tracking Challenge( hours -ridden/inhand) add your photos as well

Harvey is settling in well and now starting to test me.

I rode him in the school on Saturday morning with no issues, but then on the way back to his stable he refused to cross the drain channel on the yard. So we had a patience test - every time he tried to turn away I stopped him, otherwise he got to stand on a loose rein. After a few minutes he got bored and walked on when asked.

In the afternoon we hacked round the same 3 mile route as last week. He was much more forward going and confident this week, although we did meet an Asda van doing a home delivery which I didn't manage to get past. We stood and watched until it moved off. He'll get better as he gets to trust me - I don't think he has hacked out alone much before.

On Sunday I took him in the jumping paddock which caused much excitement - he obviously thinks jumping is a fun thing (which is good). We just did some 12" crosspoles from trot and then an 18" upright. He has a tendency to run at fences so I want to stop that from day 1, which seems to be working so far. I wanted to do more but it started pouring with really cold rain which neither he, I or my pole picker thought much of. I decided to do one more fence from canter and then call it a day so a choose a small gate which he jumped nicely. I went back to measure it later and found it was 2' 6" so I am quite pleased with that.

He is out of quarantine now so on Sunday he was turned out with the (small) herd and I moved him into his permanent stable. He had no issues with either - he seems to take everything in his stride.

Sorry no pictures yet - I'm not quite ready to take my hands off the reins for that long. Its not that he does anything - I just want to be ready if he does!

I can't wait to see photos but totally understand not wanting to take your hands off the reins.

it is awesome he Is settling in and working out well for you.;)

Out in deep woods a few years ago the person I was riding with and I ran into a Stop and Shop (grocery store)
small box truck delivery van on a really REALLY narrow trail:eek::eek::eek::eek:. It was creepy and a bit scary at first--
why is it out THERE???

Poor guy was trying to do a delivery and was LOST ( clearly an understatement) he was way beyond lost.
He bumped thru trees and brush and bushes on this narrow trail for over a mile. We had to forge a trail around him.
I have no idea how that poor guy got that truck out there really were no places for him to turn around and he had gone way way WAY too far in to try to back out.

Sonny was fine the other horse was hesitant as it really was a shock to come upon that truck so far out in the woods.

Rode for another hr yesterday it was almost like a summer day!
It was quite warm and woo hoo not windy for once.
It was quite a good ride except for being confronted by one of the next door neighbors large dogs ON MY PROPERTY
Sonny is fine with dogs and I stood my ground with the dog carrying on at me since IM ON MY PROPERTY.

I had not met the people next door yet - everyone else around is very nice.

The woman came over with a very snippy "sorry" and I just said
hello my name is ...and we have bought this property, and the dog darted off and she took off after it I think saying something
about the daughter letting it out.
I continued riding and as I passed that area talked to her other dog that was tied and seemed a nice dog it did not bark or carry on at Sonny at all.
So I don't know if she is not so friendly or if she was embarrassed at the dog confronting me ON MY PROPERTY
and it just came out sounding snippy
I have to be aware now of that possibility with that dog- thank god Sonny could care less Andi might be more reactive to just be a brat
We do want to fully fence that sideline in time (actually the whole perimeter ) in time.
But its good now I know that can be a possibility of that dog going loose.
I'm not a big dog person to begin with and even less of a fan of loose dogs but I'm NOT going to let it SPOIL MY PARADISE.
I DO NOT WANT THAT DOG MAKING ITS WAY OVER TOWARDS THE GOATS THOUGH.

So overall it was a good ride and its so great to know Sonny takes that in stride- no bothers for him.
We have run into lots of dogs and he's never flustered.

Lovely 2 hr ride overall rode my property and laneway at first
then went over and rode Virginias big ring and did some leg yield and other fun stuff .
Then rode out in woods with Virginia and we came back the road.
Weather was picture perfect and got warmish we saw a few hunters going in in vehicles they were courteous and slowed down or stopped and people on the road were very good too.

Then as we were coming back I saw car pulling in next door and bunch of kids got out so perfect time to ride MY laneway again - no dogs came out to confront me I did see a few kids looking out the sliding glass door and I waved and they waved
back. and I continued to ride it a few more times.

Was a very nice ride and the route we took was good footing wise to not need to put boots on Sonny

A mixed weekend for me. Harvey came out of quarantine last week and moved to his permanent stable and he is now turned out with 2 other geldings. On Saturday the school was closed to I decided to take him out for a hack. He was in a strange mood and started playing up the moment I got on him. All he wanted to do was to nap back to his field. I managed to get about ten minutes down the road before he refused to go any further. After 15 minutes of patent cajoling he had just turned into a sweaty mess and we still hadn't moved. I was determined he wouldn't win so I rang for help and my partner came and led him forward. I then managed to keep going for another 15 minutes until we came to a railway bridge and he started to have another meltdown. I decided not to have the battle and turned for home. At several points I turned round and started heading away from home to make the point that we weren't doing what he wanted and when we got back I rode past the gate and carried on for a bit.

He has put on a little bit of weight so I decided to eliminate food from the equation so I've cut the nuts from his feed and he is now just having chaff.

On Sunday he seemed a lot happier. I rode him in the school and as there was a jump up we had a play with that which he seemed to enjoy. After Saturday's episode a fellow livery had seem me looking sad and offered to accompany me on a hack so we has a nice quiet walk round the lanes for just over an hour. Harvey really chilled out nicely, but is is going to have to learn to hack alone as there is rarely anyone else hacking out.

Sorry he was bratty - maybe it was the feed ???
Mine get ration balancer but not hard feed.

I am really glad Sonny has not problem alone for so many years that really was my only option.
It was very nice to not ride alone on the trails yesterday.

I'm feeling just a tiny bit jealous!

I have to admit when I see lovely beach views and riding on the
beach etc I get " a little twinge of jealousy too".

The one thing someone posted last year was an event they did
at "Windsor Castle" they had a photo riding on the
long laneway going in and the castle was in the backround
was amazing -- ok that was a "BIG" twinge.:)

I'm very happy with this place though.:):););):D:D:D

When my rd pen comes in and we get it set up to do freelonging like I could do at the old place I will really love that though;)

Andi's third birthday party had apple bobbing> One of the girls that worked at that barn UGH
bobbed as well (and she was not the first nose in that bucket)
She was the only human:rolleyes:.

Its was interesting to watch differnet horses do it.

I also had a piñata filled with horse treats all the horses had a great time with that too.(no humans this time)

Harvey had his second flu and tet jabs on Tuesday. Luckily my allocated "slot" was 3:30 to 5:30 so I was able to ride first. He was quite good in the school and we managed a bit of steering with no reins, leg yield and a bit of jumping. He is so greedy for treats he didn't even notice his jabs.

I took him in the school again on Saturday and he wasn't too bad, but he wasn't really concentrating so I put an L of poles on the floor and rode circles across the corner to make him look what he was doing. In the afternoon I put on my brave trousers and took him out hacking (after last weeks meltdown). He was a bit reluctant and spooky to start with, but he did settle and relax a bit and we got round without any huge dramas. Because I was pleased with him I broke my normal rule and gave him his treat before I untacked him. I then later spent quite a while cleaning horse treats out of the links in his bit - I won't be making that mistake again!

On Sunday unusually there was somebody else in the school (3 horses all jumping) so I had to wait until nearly dusk so we just had a quick ride. When he was good, he was good, but a couple of times he just switched off and ignored me which was a bit disappointing.

Out around the lanes
