Wrong time of year to be thinking this

I'm thinking ahead to winter, sorry.

The winter just gone mine was calling to the person who brings him in by 11am some days to be bought in, stood by the gate etc. Turned out around 6am.

I haven't rugged him for many years now except really adverse weather. I'm wondering if I should start. I use winter to try and get some weight off but I'm not overly successful as he ends up stabled alot and I don't want him to go for long periods without hay. He was bought in by 12 some days last winter and then given a haynet later. Most days in around 3pm.

Lovely big field, they don't hay in the field but some grass year round, lots of friends out with him.

So I could start rugging him, maybe also clip a bit to help with the weight loss. Another option just very small haynet in the stable, no exciting feeds or anything and see if I can get someone later to put in feeds etc so he doesn't link coming in to getting tasty food. I can't come back in the evenings with my current job, that may change.

I have no control over the yard, he was turned out every single day at least, which considering the weather I think was a blessing. I've also considered moving yards but he's so happy and settled.

Yes, he's fat.

A rug can make a lot of difference to the comfort of some so yes, I'd certainly try a rainsheet to at least keep the wind and rain (please can we have rain?) off him and see if that makes him happier to stay out. Maybe see if you can borrow a few to try on for fit, they do vary a lot though luckily he doesn't look to be an extreme shape, and be aware that the very cheap ones are often more showerproof than waterproof and never seem to last long.

I would consider rugging, even belly clip with it to keep the weight loss up and a rain sheet just so he’s more comfortable with the weather if that’s what is bothering him, I think you have to adapt as the get older. Jess never wanted more than a 100g rug, but she’s 23 now and appreciated a 200g some of last winter.

Definitely agree with the rug aspect as they get older. I have always struggled to keep weight of ours, but as Zi has got older (and softer!) he will always be happy to stay out longer if rugged. Fuzzy seems similar. Ours free range at night but during the day they are in the field only with no shelter. I find both happier on less good weather days in a light weight rug.

@MirjaHuttunen I'm pretty sure she's meaning he'd be turned out with a rug on, not that he'd have one put on if he started making a fuss. @MrA does he even need a bucket feed if you want him to lose weight? Maybe a balancer of a handful of chaff with a vit and min supplement, but nothing exciting.

That's all his feed is, cup of balancer, handful of hifi and then his supplements but for a haffy that is still clearly very exciting and worth coming in for
