Why should we wear Hi-Viz whilst out hacking?

I am really suprised that some people are actually arguing reasons to NOT wear hi viz. I can't think of a single good reason to not wear it frankly.
It is so simple, causes you no discomfort, & the thought that it MIGHT prevent an accident or injury is enough for me to wear it. Just the thought that it is a preventative measure makes it an essential bit of kit for me.
I am not saying we should go out wrapped in cotton wool, but for those using roads, in my opinion it is common sense.
You will always have hooligans on the road, wherever you go, I was hit by a car over the summer by a drunk boy racer. At least in my defense I was lit up like a xmas tree so my lack of visibility couldn't be used as an argument.

I just don't get it...my horses safety & my own & those that I ride with is way too important to just not bother..

I am afraid thats the way I see it..harsh as it seems..that if you don't bother wearing it..you just don't care.

Just a thought; I only recently passed my driving test (in my thirties!) and whilst I would consider myself very careful, it's only since I've become a driver myself I've really realised just how easy it can be to 'miss' cyclists and pedestrians in dark clothing, especially at this time of year. Sometimes - not always - but sometimes, I don't spot them immediately, and it always unnerves when they suddenly 'appear' as if out of nowhere (ie visually my brain registers they're there)

I know a horse and rider are much more obvious visually than cyclists or pedestrians (and as a sensible driver I never go bombing round corners etc anyway), but bear in mind that not all drivers have lightning reactions (kids in the back, or just inexperienced drivers like myself). It's just much easier to immediately see hi-viz clothing.;)

I actually also think it should be law that horse riders & cyclists should wear some kind of hi vis when on roads.
My route home from work involves some small lanes which are popular with cyclists. Even those with lights on their bikes can be difficult to see, those with some hi viz on are so much more visible from much further away.
In the rain on my way home yesterday I almost ran someone straight over. Dark road, no lights, rain, cyclist with just a small flashing red light on back of bike was almost invisible.

I completely agree with all those in favour of hi-viz, never ride out without at least one item on, at the minute it's all over both of us! My sister recently passed me and two of my riding companions - one as kitted out as me & the other in nothing. As we got back to the yard her comment was along the lines of 'so-and-so couldn't been seen anywhere near as well as you, plus she looked silly next to you two'

Just don't understand why anyone who claims to love their horse would be willing to risk both their lives riding out 'dark'

hold on one min!!!! am i the only person in here who dont wear high viz???NO will be the answer so why dont u say whatr u have to to the other person???? who are you to tell me about my attitude?
if i choose not to wear hi viz then that is my choise and no one elses ok. no one has the right to tell me what i should or shouldnt do! oh ounless it was law but it aint. (sits and waqits for the next troll to jump out the pc)

What very puzzling posts you write. How old are you?

As far as I am aware, yours was the only roll-eyes response to my mention of contributory negligence and responsibility to other road users. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Surely you cannot be unaware that motor vehicle driving licences have age restrictions? You must be MUCH younger than I imagined!

what are u on about now???? i rolled my eyes at you cos u quoted my post as me not wearin hi viz but didnt quote anyone else. my age has nothing to do with anything

Liz i totally agree with your comments (and MH is not a child)

What annoys me is that there are people who refuse to wear Hi-Viz but then will blame anyone but themselves when they get into an accident !!

I do a lot of driving and am very careful, but horses DO blend into hedgerows, etc. Car drivers do have to put their lights on to be seen, so why shouldn't us riders wear hi-viz on the roads !! There is no excuse at all in my opinion !

I have to say ithink it's un-fair snapping at people who choose not to wear it, it's there own choice quite frankly and i'm sure they have good reasons which they follow.

In my opinion (being someone who sometimes does sometimes doesn't) if on a good day you couldn't see a horse on the roads i usually ride on then you should get off the road. They are straight and open, then wehn you look at ones with tight bends.. hi-viz doesn't mean you can see through 7ft hedges!

However whenever visibility isn't brilliant i do wear it. And sometimes even when i think its good i do. But someitmes i'm guna be honest i do forget!

Not to mention the fact that most Hi-viz stuff isn't exactly cheap.

Yes, I thought you only had 2 years to make a claim from an accident or incident!

4 years seems a heck of a long time for him to chew over it .

Sorry but MH is definately is not a child neither has she said she refuses to wear hi-viz. In my humble opinion (MH please don't shout at me) I personally wouldn't leave my yard without hi-viz. That being said I wouldn't leave the yard without a hat either but I see loads of people doing that as well! I do believe in freedom of choice and if MH doesn't wish to wear Hi-Viz then that's her choice, although I will say its a bit double standard of you to make your child wear hi-viz yet choose not to wear it yourself.

Yes I agree that wearing hi-viz will not stop an idiot driver driving too fast or taking unncessary risks. However I can say, with experience, that should you ever come off and end up in a hedge unconscious due to one of these idiot drivers then you'll be happy of the 2 extra seconds it took you to put on a tabard when it takes the helicopter or ambulance 2 seconds faster to find you and provide you or your horse with medical attention.

I'm not having a go at anyone personally with this post so please don't shoot me down in flames.

im not a child

OK then - three questions.

1. For how long have you held a full driving licence, and is it 'clean'?
2. How many miles a year do you drive?
2. Do you accept that, as a road user of any class, you have a certain degree of responsibility to other road users?

If you are a non-driver, or an inexperienced driver, then I refer you to post number 63 by Mina in this thread.

Oooohhhh, now steady on there! Woah!

As a motorcyclist that comment sticks in my throat. I could be lit up wearing whistles and bells and car drivers STILL don't look.

Wearing high viz does not make you invincible, defensive riding is required as much as care from the car driver.

I think this whole thread boils down to motorist attitude. Why SHOULD pedestrians, and cyclists and horse riders go out in fear on the roads. Why is the onus on everyone else and NOT the car driver? There is something deeply wrong with the attitude of it being okay to run someone down if they are not wearing high viz.
