What is a 'spring tree'?

My saddle is english leather, made in walsall (sp?)

Under the girth straps its been stamped:

'Spring tree
Saddle made in Walsall'

But what exactly is a spring tree? Is it just a normal tree? Or is it designed for different disiplines etc? :confused:
 
my dressage saddle has a spring tree (not sure on brand but from walsall)

lovely saddle, dont know if it makes a difference!
ETA- ours is made by crown saddlery, and its called a regal dressage saddle (i think)

I just thought all trees were the same, I didn't know there were different types! :o
