What causes dapples?

I've seen poor ponies with plenty of dapples, and serious fattys with none at all.
General thoughts nowadays are to do with the blood supply.

I'd also say, dapples are genetic. A heavily dapples mare with a heavily dappled stallion, the offspring, will more than likely show their dapples by the time they reach 5-6 years old.

There was a post a while back that my thermal imaging vet friend posted.
It is possible that dappling is a visible sign of circulation in the horse. Blood vessels are closer to the surface of the skin over the flanks, shoulders and belly. This may be to help cool the horses down when they sweat, equally, they might just have a really good blood circulation.

Some people will also tell you that the hair grows differently over dapples. Shorter hair on the 'ring' and finer hair in the center.

My 3/4 Arab gets black dapples over her back and rump in the summer, and they stay just about visible over Winter. They're rather lovely :)
My elderly Cob has fabulous dapples on her underbelly and shoulders, but not her rump or flank
Both these mares ^ are a deep liver chestnut..
