What an awful afternoon

Just when I think Fuz can't do anything else to hurt herself (she has a track record of accidents!). We were just settling lunch and the squalls came and I heard a bang. I wondered if they had knocked into the back door - they sometimes jockey about there.

Poor old girl has hurt her head. I am not good with blood and on first look seeing the skin flapping and blood I almost fainted. Rang the vet who got here in half an hour. All cleaned now and stitched up. She needed sedation as she's awful with her head and does not like it touching and flings it around for the headcollar most days. Got antibiotics for her and vet coming Monday to x ray the foot anyway.
I am going round the field shortly when I've got my breath back to see if I can locate the source of the injury.
We heard a bang and they were both up at the gate near the garage. There's blood on the wall at the side of the garage but I think it is just where she walked past and flung her head out? There's a bit of fur there too. But nothing that would cause injury. I do know there's a bit of barbed wire left - we did try and get shut of most of it when we came here.
Just glad its not worse. Still bleeding a bit as she said there's an artery under one part of the stitching - she said it will stop. Any NR healing vibes for her most appreciated.

Oh Hell! Lots and lots of vibes on the way Trewsers, that must have looked like a bloodbath and scared you silly 🤗

I wonder if the blood on the wall is where she did it? If she hit the wall hard enough the cuts could be where the skn split from the force of the impact.

As an aside are those swellings above her eyes normal for her? I ask because they're a strong indicator of PPID and another thing associated with that is abscesses.

Thanks for the vibes. Yes those swellings (I think) are normal for her. I wondered about PPID too. I'm going to mention to the vet on Monday. I was only saying to Mr T earlier today before all this drama I wondered if she had PPID as I've heard about abscesses being associated with it too.
Yes it was awful all the blood, I am not good with blood and had to give myself a good talking too. Actually I sat down with my head down for a moment or two whilst waiting on the vet as felt faint.
I've just eaten a bit of chocolate to get myself sorted too. Walked the field and can't see anything obvious. I think you might be right about the wall - and hitting it hard. Zi can be such a daft beggar at times and I think he had chased her up and of course with Storm being loose on the yard the gate was closed until I heard the bang and let them in. (I had to put Storm in the cat barn first).
 
Oooooh poor Fuzzy, I bet she has a headache. Nice job by the vet though and well done for being brave enough to cope with the blood. I'm ok with blood but can't cope with vomit and I don’t think I'd be able to pull myself together enough to deal with it, so you have my respect!

Hope Fuzzy is ok, she's not having the best of luck at the moment is she 👐

She was in good spirits this morning. I let her stop in last night, vet said probably better if she would settle indoors and she did. Getting the antibiotic down her is a challenge, she's normally not fussy but I'm having to disguise it and give her some of Storm's apple mash. She's been out for a while with Zi this morning. Poor lass, you can't predict accidents and honestly, she seems so accident prone.
I remember when we went to look at her in her old home, and her old owner told me that she'd sat on top of a hen house in their garden and gotten her leg stuck and had to have that stitched up!
And she did tell me she was bad for escaping etc and getting into trouble. Oh dear. I want to hug her (gently) but she's not really a huggy kind of pony! Thanks all for the good thoughts.
I am so tired today though, I slept four hours straight last night which is rare for me!
 
Barbed wire is nasty stuff..

Its been illegal here for many many years
But still years its ugly head.

We had some to remove at the old house.

We found some at a perimeter area
Along one part on the 33 acres years ago
Ugh coming out of the ground.

We were lucky here
There wasn't any here

Wow it's not TOTALLY ILLEGAL

For industrial..commercial...prisons ..
Military
Airports etc
On top of tall chain link perimeter fencing

We didn't seem to have any here
They developed this place in 1997

It was a pig and cow farm
They used multi strand electric wire.

But long fallow raw land like the 33 acres was.
Or even before they developed this place.
Out of woodlands..

The likelihood is good anywhere.

There's a lot of barbed wire around here. Thing is, I often see the cows with their heads hanging over it and it never seems to bother them! Eeeek. We have more or less got shut of all the nasty rusty stuff that was here, but there's always bits I either don't see or that get covered over with growth. The actual outer perimeter here is barbed wire but the horses can't get near that as we have the post and rail that OH put up combined with poly poles. If she did get on barbed wire there's only one place it could have been and yesterday I couldn't see any evidence she'd snagged on it. One of life's mysteries.
 
I swear some horses could injure themselves in a padded box while others get into the most dreadful scrapes and walk away without a mark on them. Unfortunately it sounds like she's the former.

@horseandgoatmom ultimately no fencing is safe. Twice I've seen horrific injuries from good post and rail fencing, generally felt to be the safest of the lot, and one of those came within a hairs breadth of not pulling through while the other never came sound again. Yes I've seen more minor injuries from barbed wire, but nothing close to the severity. Mind you I suspect you could put some horses out on a thousand miles of flat prairie and they'd still find a hole to trip in!

@Trewsers don't beat yourself up about it, no-one can control everything. She's going to be ok and hopefully the abscess will resolve soon too and you can get some more riding in in your lovely cool summer.

I spotted something a bit back on my way to town. Someone who keeps their ponies in a field next to the roadside has put pipe lagging over the barbed wire fence perimeter. I'm going to see about getting some for ours. I would need quite a bit but it would definitely be worth it.

Yes, sadly Fuzzy seems to manage to do herself a mischief wherever she is! We've lived here ten years now and had horses here and until she arrived nobody had ever shown any interest in the cat barn side door. It is a low level doorway and part of the original dwelling and probably over 250 years old. There's a lovely stone lintel supporting it and yes, you guessed it, Fuzzy managed to squeeze under it and inside. Why oh why. She didn't hurt herself that time. But I think she slightly dislodged the stone and then Zi investigated and loosened it. Resulting in Mr T having to spend considerable time reinforcing it and making it safe again. Honestly - if I lagged everything in rubber she would do something with it!
 
Good taught barbed wire is not as terrible as you might think, it’s when it’s baggy they’re more likely to get hurt by it. I wouldn’t think covering with foam would be wise as they’re more likely to lean on it/climb it and the barbs then poke through and do something, it’s probably only really good for protecting rugs from being shredded by it.
