Welsh D's

They seem to fall into one of two categories ime. The safe, sane allrounders who are ideal first horses, and nutters. They tend to be quite sensitive souls and don't forgive easily but get a good one and you can't go wrong.

I grew up around Welsh studs and I love them - there are a few people who wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

it wasnt a brweed i even thought abpout much untill i got a part bred and fell in love lol..im now a huge fan and any future horses will most def be pure or part d x

My new buy is a pure welsh sec D. Bought him as suitable for a novice mother/daughter share. Had him a month, and that's what he is! He is quiet, relaxed and easy to handle (sometimes strong on the ground around food though :D). He's great with traffic, loves to be groomed, easy to tack-up and straightforward to ride (if a little lazy in the school at times).....

With Chev on this one. Had a welsh D for my first loan horse and he was lovely but spooked at everything including his own shadow. Then got a welsh C on full loan and she was wonderful. Safe as houses but I just could not get along with her.

Agree with Chev and Miriam. My boy is my best friend, but in the perfect world there is no way I should have ever owned him. I was a novice, first horse owner, and he was a young colt. He is a very sensitive soul with regards to being ridden and spooking, but he has a wonderfully friendly personality and really tries his heart out.

My new boy is also a welsh D, not the most suitable horse i could have picked as he is slightly green and i am a novice, but circumstances meant i picked him and i couldn't be happier. I love him dearly. He is a genuine horse, though sometimes tries to push his luck!

ditto chev.

they either do everything for you and are fabulous (got one :D), or they are good at asking questions and not giving you the right answers :p

I have a naughtly one!! the last girl i thought was experienced enough to have a go got on lasted five mins before been shown the power of a welshie!!!

I used to work at a riding school that had some good ones that would take novices or liven up for more experienced! they all had personality tho just depends on each individual as in every breed :)

I have a mare now and previously had a gelding, neither I would say are first ponies though probably ideal second! Both challenged me! I think it is down to the individual more than a breed, in most breeds you will find the ideal first pony and in most you will find those that aren't, just some breeds have more of the first ponies than others!

Mine is totally solid and dependable, great first horse, but she has age on her side at 14.

Unless of course she's in season, and then she's a clingy, squealy little tramp who suddenly jogs on hacks and becomes a general pain in the backside :o  Love her really. She is still practically un-spookable though, even when in season.

My welsh d is my first pony. She'd turn her hoof to most things at a lower level and a good all rounder in that respect.

However she does need a leader. Someone who knows their own mind and will stick to it.

She's been a great first pony for me and will be with me for life. However, for a less steadfast person she would feel more insecure which could lead to problems.

I love welshies :D I'd say they can make fairly good all round first ponies- but it def. depends on the individual ponio! Some are mad, some are quiet plodders.

they ten dto be quite strong! in my expirience they need to be kept in line, and can sometimes be a bit bargy. but are sweet enough but i wouldnt buy them as a first pony, try a section c or an irish cob type! =]

ditto. lol

my friend has one for sale....total nutcase.

im not a fan of welshies.

Molly's not registered but clearly Welsh D, and my first pony although I am not a total novice (rode in RS for 23 years first and shared for 2).

She has a few "quirks" but I LOVE her and she is perfect for me :D:D I think she would be a handful for someone less confident as she is very bright and does need boundaries!

If I ever get a 2nd pony it'll be a Welsh D or part-bred. Utterly love them, even though mine is a bit bonkers :p

OH has a Sec. D mare. Was seduced by her looks when he bought her (chestnut with Flaxen mane and tail). So strong and wilful. Had several homes before coming to us though because of this. Wit and patience is what wins everyday with her though - you would never get the better of her physically. You just cannot outstrength these beauties! Spooky, mareish, and nappy, but my OH wouldn't change her for the world!!:D Comes to whistle and mutually grooms.

Seriously though - All horses are different with different personalities, and Sec. D's are no different. There are however a very strong breed, and very intelligent. Some may be suitable for a first horse but all the ones I have known are much better owned as second horses one the individual has more confidence both on the ground and in the saddle.

O...
