Vet versus Equine Dentist

We haven't got equine dentists around here. So, yes, it's the vet. And I see nothing wrong with that.

The reason I asked was that for three years of owning our first mare, I have used the vets. Our vets are brilliant and I was more than happy to use them, feeling reassured that all that was needed was a file on a regular basis.

However, I had an equine dentist out last week and both mares needed extensive dental work! Im devastated.

I thought I was in safe hands and that if more extensive work was required the vet would tell me and refer me to a ED.

Both mares had back teeth that were so sharp and had ulcers. I feel so bad for not giving them the proper attention.

Rode my mare for the first time since the ED visit and the difference in her was amazing.

So its ED for my horses from now on.

My Vet has trained as a dentist tooso I have no worries about using him for my horses teeth

EDT degree is what, 3 or 4 years?
A vet degree is what, 5 years? That isnt just equine teeth, thats a variety of animals, with probably not alot of that time touching on equine teeth... the whole degree of EDT training is all dentistry...

Question is, would you trust your GP to see to your teeth? Check them over, add fillings, and all the treatments that your dentist does for you? ... Dont think so!

A vet who is properly trained in dentistry won't just know what they study as part of the degree course. Our vets go on regular refresher and update courses in equine dentistry.
