Right update as promised and requested, picked up snapper from reading services Saturday morning, the pictures of her didn’t do her justice, (i had not seen the mare or tried her) for a ish she is a very well put together striking horse, have her a leg stretch in the hgv part of reading services before re loading her and heading for Devon, she travelled like there wasn’t a horse on bored, 4 hours later got back to the yard unloaded led her around to stretch legs then put her in stable, quick sniff and munched hay! Totally chilled!.

Left alone then went back and stood by her door where she proceeded to fly at me stamp feet and run her teeth up the wall!

Back up early am, fed mucked out got my 2 boys in and put her out with the herd (6 others all ponies) my god can she move!! Not just in speed but action she was cantering slowly and the ponies were flat out trying to reach her, but no kicking or biting so that was good.

Back to yard at lunch... worked the other 2 then went to get her in, clipped lead rope on put a hand on her neck and nearly got savaged! (for you guys that haven’t read previous post this mare is a grade c showjumper she had been for sale since April but due to every problem going the lady couldn’t sell her, so unseen and at meat money i bought her there’s nasty in a horse but this one really would flatten you)

I had planned to ride but she was wet so opted for the in hand work, so off we went down the lane, really good and interested in everything. But i touch her and see teeth, she also tries to drag you to the nearest thing edible, so every time she done this i backed her up by the time we got home, i was walking with my hand on neck if i stopped she stopped if walked backwards so did she, amazing, no biting and ears forward.
Back at the yard needed brushing ...queue round 2.... tail going, back legs flying, teeth aiming, spotted a bucket tried to drag me, every time she was a twitch out of line i backed her up, 15 mins later bushed her all over even her belly whilst stood with her ears forward on the end of the lead rope, time for rug, kicking biting stamping, repeated the same talking to her rubbing her 10 mins later was behind her pulling rug back whilst she stood on the end of the rope quiet as a lamb,

Put her back out went straight off and grazed, went and got Pluto as his the boss of the field and wanted them to meet other than over the stable door(which my 2 are she’s met Pluto and max as they can reach over the doors, Pluto got the teeth max apparently she was rearing up at! ) poor Pluto had a sniff and got both back feet! She walked off Pluto stood looking at me as much as to say why the hell did you do that to me mum!

My thoughts on this mare is that she has been beaten, when i went to take her tail bandage off last night she was trying to kick me, i picked up a whip (no intention of even touching her with it) and she stood stock still. In the stable and field she is savage but comes over and wants to talk to you, she just doesn’t know how, I was texting a friend she came over showed her the phone and nearly lost it, everything is a treat to her, I’m so sure she has a character and would love to see it, at the moment she’s on regumate, and a no sugar diet, i want to drop the regumate and she how bad she is then play! Im dying to ride her (god nos why as she rears and bucks but does jump over 1m20!)

The next bit is up to you lot if you want regular updates please let me know id love to share the ups and downs with this little horse who was even at a grade c showjumper was heading for the meat man! But i don’t want to bore you all!

heres some pics .... have a look at my prevoius post for pics of her jumping

i vote LOADS of updates!

WOW reading services is ages way from devon! (stayed at MOD fremlington the other week and reading was our 1st service stop!)

snapper came all the way from suffolk previous owner bought her as far as reading for us!! (she was serious desperate to get rid and relived that she had fianlly found someone to have her!!)

Are you sure the Regumate is really needed? Many people think that a dominant mare trying to put humans below her in the pecking order is having hormone troubles - but

My own mare acts all studdy and grunts when she is being aggressive and it is scary, but it just needed me to stand up to her and do lots round pen type work until she was tired and behaving!

I've heard of at least one other similar situation (a half-sister to my mare, in fact) where the desperate seller said the horse was hormonal. The original breeder bought her back and put her back into hard work and all was fine.

not sure about the regumate, i am going to take her off it as i would like to see her in her natural ways, she also cant have sugar so am thinking of giving the simple systems feeding a try! the more i thnk about her the more i dont think she is a dominant mare but defensive, its alsmost like applying human psychology.

Not knowing the mare, but knowing the yard she came from, I definatley want regualr updates with pictures!

Shes an absolute stunner, and I reckon that by this time next year you will have an absolute bargain!

think you was right about the yard, very posh people, should be a well schooled mare, flying changes ect, (all though bucks when doing them) am planing on first ride tomorrow pm so update 2 shall be on way, tonight im going to start working on the if you so much as look at me whilst im eating im going to kill you! (this will be done by just standing by her stable door and her relising im not going to touch her rob her food ect, i want her to relise im not a threat and to stop flying at me!)

as for the bargin... yes i deff have one have had an offer of 3x what i paid for her already!

I would like to hear updates too and think it is great that you are giving her another chance.

thank you nicp, i hope she sees sence!! shes a real classy mare, think im going to take out life insurance before i do get an injury! and im glad you guys want the updates, should i ever sell on her on this will be like a diary of travels,

Good luck with her - looks like there's something really special waiting for you in her. Hopefully it'll shine through eventually with all your hard work - and you have to keep us all updated so we can follow the progress (which I have complete faith that there will be - it sounds like just one day together and you made a step in the right direction)

I love her name - has she had it since birth, or is it to do with her behaviour?! Do you know her history and breeding?

her eg name is snap dragon, hence snapper, im trying to not call her that! have toned it down to schnapps snapper just makes me think bite!!
yes i know her breeding, its very good, so if the worst came to the worst she would be worth putting her in foal, and yes i know the last 3 years of history had thought about writting to the breeder would love to know if she had ever been mistreated for sure.
