If I was to put money on a horse being suited to carriage driving I'd place a small wager on him, but I have been surprised before at the reaction of laid back characters when confronted with driving harness,

Exactly ! makes you think it odd when people say in a sales adert " would make excellent driver" when the horse has never seen a harness/cart before in its life! Anyhorse can make a driving horse given correct time, patience and training!

the right temperment is of course a good starting base though!
 
IME 7 out of 10 make good driving horses that most competent folk can cope with, 2 make driving horses only an experienced knowledgeable driver ought to deal with and one out of ten will be unsafe to realistically carry on driving. Might be dead laid back riding horses, just a head case in harness. I hav met 2 in 30 years I would not feel comfortable selling as a driving horse.
