Has anyone got a solo comb (or similar)? I will need to pull Ellies mane in a few weeks time and would much rather use one of these combs. Are they easy to use? What are the results like?
Cheers :)

Hi Katie,

I've got one and its much easier than pulling a mane and nicer for the horse. It took me a couple of goes to get the technique right and to end up with a straight mane.

Make sure you clean it and spray a little oil on it after every use, otherwise it can jam up with hair.

Can be used on tails to but be careful as i took a big chunk out of my horses tail the first time i did it!

I use one and it took me a couple of goes to perfect (and I use the term loosely!) the technique. The most important thing I discovered through trial, error and the advice of a more experienced solo'er is that after the backcombing, bend the remaining hair up towards the comb before cutting.

I just couldn't face pulling a mane the traditional way. No matter what the old hands tell me, I don't believe it doesn't hurt. Otherwise why would so many horses be upset by it?

I never thought of lubricating the blade, mine has become a bit reluctant and I bet thats whats lacking! Thanks for that :)

I've got the one which you can change the blades, it obviously more expensive than the disposable one but i've had mine 2 years, done about 20 - 30 course cobby manes and not had to change the blade yet. It definately helps to clean and lubricate it after every use.

Have a good shopping trip! Where are you going?? I think Robinsons have the solo combs.

So jealous, got to sit behind my desk for the next 7 hours whilst you shop in my 2 favourite shops!!! Not that i'm doing much work as the boss is in Antigua on holiday this week - might sneak off early and go play with the nags! shh don't tell anyone!:D

Hope you've got plenty of cash or plastic with you - i always spend loads at Derby House.

I bought one the other week to trim Molly's very long and very thick mane. I've never pulled or trimmed mane's before, but with a bit of practice, it comes. If its not windy this weekend, I'll try and finish it off.

On the blade front, mine came with disposable blades (pack of 10 for about £3 from B&Q). Used about 4 blades first time round!

i have one too, but i find it very hard to use lol. cracker hates having his mane pulled he tends to crush u between the gate or wall and himself not nice. so we bought the solo comb whic i have yet to use efficiently:D but with cracker being a cob i suppose al i should really do it try to thin its more than shorten it. but yes i would advise the solocomb to anyone who thinks they can use it better than me lol!!!
