An idea to get us chatting.

Today's experience was teeth, sedation, twitch, tet restart so she's in sync totally with boyfriend who she's living with.

I mentioned that I can't ever recall getting a vet to do teeth and she said it's fairly recent thing. I think that the equine dentist must also be fairly new as well, after the vet training. I actually don't recall learning about it as a kid, or seeing the riding stables get anyone out.

We have the vet because she needs sedation and it goes on her records at the vet.
She's also on the vet worming scheme.
I dropped flu during COVID and that's when her tet lapsed for three years. (Bad mum)

Now we are sharing we can share the vet call or and pick a zone day. So that's why I decided to restart her Tet properly because this visit is half price and so it's the next one and as she's living with another she just might be more accident prone!!!

So what do you do and why?
Does your vet do shared call outs, zone days.

Ps. It's anyone tempted to book the vet to get their own teeth done as it would be cheaper, apparently they do fillings.😂

Lol to getting the vet to do own teeth! Hahahaha. I like my dentist, we are on a private plan which is very very reasonable and he's a nice guy too which helps. I'm like Storm (special lol) and have to see him every three to four months for extra cleaning / x rays. I have wonky gnashers like Storm !

I don't get the flu jab for the horses - but mr t and me do for ourselves lol

I get tet for all three and I'm pleased to say that Storm doesn't seem to need sedation now for her teeth. I have a lovely vet that seems to have a really great way with doing her teeth and she happily complies. Zi needs a weeny bit of sedative but Fuzzy doesn't. The terrible two get their teeth checked twice a year. Storm lots more often as she needs them picking and flushing, though her gaps are getting much wider now which is helping her.

Fuzzy hadn't had tetanus jabs for years and years so last year when she came here I had to start from scratch but its well worth having done I feel as she is quite cheeky and will be apt to get herself into some scrapes!

Worming I don't do very often but I get worm egg counts done - have got wormer from the vets to do later this year but its very minimal as they are low risk and all have very low egg counts.

As for horses teeth in the past, I don't honestly know. I came to horse ownership late in life at 33 and at that time it was normal (least it was on our yard) for the vet to routinely check their teeth. I'm guessing in the past not so much.
I remember Joe our first horse back in 2005 having not so good teeth because they'd not been done much if at all according to the vet when she looked. His owner was quite a bit older than me and had had horses for many many years, so perhaps it just wasn't that normal back in their day.

Flu and tet done. I get the dentist for teeth. but I can remember vets and dentists being around when I was a kid so they certainly aren't new! He also gets regular physio.

When I had Chunky being my fist horse nobody told me that teeth should be done regularly. Coming from a farm background you never did cows or sheep. I was told he reacted to the flu jab so previous owner never did it again. I assumed tetanus was a once in a lifetime thing or every 10 years ish like a human.
I think I'd had chunky 9 years before he saw a vet for teeth. It took me that long to find out about teeth checks. In actual fact I probably learned about it from this forum. I do remember the vet saying inspite him not having had his teeth done they were in remarkable good condition and would probably never need his teeth doing again. Well I did have them done ever year after that and apart from that front tooth that he had to have removed that twisted outward and was loose, the vets always said he had good teeth and only needed very minimal rasping. They all put it down to my grazing management.
One of the vets educated me in tetanus and gave me a talk about that being the most important jab the horse should get. Didnt matter about flu if he wasnt mixing with others.

@chunky monkey my dentist says a lot of proper cobs tend to have good teeth and he thinks it's because the head shape hasn't been messed about with and so there's plenty of room for teeth to sit properly and the jaw to move how it should.

Flu and tet and Raf's on the vet plan because I get a discount on his Cushings meds so when they send out a worm testing kit for him I get one for AJ too. Raf also has an annual Cushings check.

I have an EDT to do their teeth but on the advice of the physio I had the vet out at the same time to sedate them both. The physio said they can get a better look at the back teeth with sedation and she had a query about Raf because he was a bit resistant to having his jaw moved side to side. I won't have them sedated every time though. And Raf's teeth were fine.

They also have the physio - Raf not so much now hes retired - and AJ when I think it's been a while. And AJ has routine six monthly saddle checks on the advice of the saddler because he's young and changing shape.

Of mine anyone going out gets flu/tet. Our vets only do tet every other year now.

I normally tet the others but the little boys lapsed in covid, and I haven’t restarted them yet, I do keep meaning to but one thing and another gets in the way.

All go a year or more for teeth, depending on what the vet says but I suspect that is going to change pretty soon, Jess has a caries or maybe broken tooth, noted 2 years ago. It was a bit tender with impacted food at last check up (2 weeks ago) but as she hasn’t been having any eating issues, we’ve opted to wait and see as pulling it will cause its own issues.

I have the osteo out as needed.

The vet said they found it easier to see and work with the back teeth if they are sedated. That tribute also isn't so likely to keep moving. It's a big head when you look right in which I was able to do.

Teeth - visiting equine dentist (comes twice a year) and really knows his stuff. I only get the oldies done before winter. The rest seem to stuff food in pretty well so I can't afford ten horses being done.

Our vet and teeth - well lest said probably the better.

Our vet will combine a visit but I am not sure if it is any cheaper ie If he is on the westside of the island then I can be fitted in. If not, then it is more of a case of wait until he has more visits in my area.

Though everything is much cheaper if it is a sheep or a cow. I know that.

Sid has the dentist once a year. I would forget but Christine always remembers and books it so I just need to turn up.

I do get his flu/tet jabs done for the once in a blue moon when we want to go out to a riding club event or whatever.

All of mine have tetanus jabs and/or flu - at the moment you can't get a tetanus only jab so Lily was done today with flu/tet.

We have had the same dentist for years but sadly today I found out that he has been doing a rubbish job. He comes out every near but as Buddy needed sedation for gapping, we had another dentist to visit - he is actually a vet who then decided to specialise in dentistry instead and works closely with my main vet Sarah who has looked after all of mine for years. Both came out today to do them all, Buddy was to be sedated as his teeth need a lot of work, but when he was checked he was declared perfectly fine no need for treatment. He has been seen by this dentist three times now originally every six months due to his age and his gaps. As my usual is off sick following surgery, I got him to do the entire team. I was horrified to find out how bad their teeth were and three were done under sedation.

Harmony was the worst - and given i had her teeth done 2 days after she arrived in November last year, as well as the others, I was very upset to learn that she had so many sharp edges and a fracture and generally her teeth looked like they hadn't been done in years. She, Scooby and Fleur were done under sedatoin and again they were all pretty bad. Suze was the only one apart from Buddy, whose teeth were reasonably good.

So will stick with this arrangement as they were given a very thorough check just very annoyed that Harmony has been ridden with teeth like that when I thought she had been done properly. He spent much more time on them but i feel really let down by the original dentist.

That flu and tet combo makes no sense to me as one is yearly and the other is every two years.

I didn't realise it was combined now. Vet never mentioned it when starting Fuzzy on it last year. I recall she hadn't had a tetanus jab for years according to previous owner, so I had her started and I think it was one jab, followed by another call out for the other one. Then she had another this year. Hmm. I am sure the other two get the tetanus top up every other year. God now I'm confused hahahahaha.
I don't bother with the flu for them as they don't leave the yard and we rarely have any visitors.

We are tet every two years, the combo only doesn't make sense to me. But everyone wants flu. I don't anymore.

The combo made sense when it was thought tet was needed every year, now I expect most people who vaccinate for both do what Ido and have combined one year and flu only the next. While I don't go anywhere I vaccinate for flu because we're in contact and close proximity to horses that do so it seems a sensible precautionto me.
