Is there anyone out there who knows of any suppliers of these containers? I had heard that this type of stabling was a very easy and sturdy way of building a stable yard without the need of lengthy and destructive building.

Does anybody have any experience of this sort of stabling and storage and is it expensive?

Look forward to your replys :)

www.garic.co.uk rent them out for around 15.00 or £25.00 for the larger ones and quite a few people around here have them. Only thing is though the stables are really tiny only 8ft by 8ft or 8ft by 12ft. Not sure if you would be cheaper to buy one and adapt it yourself in the long term and maybe you can buy them wider as garic don't do them any bigger.

You can leave out the partition and have it as a field shelter. They are good if you have no electricity on yard as they have solar panel lights for winter and storage for your tack. Floor is good to as wooden and as a plug for wet to drain out of.

I have a horse book that details the different type of stabling and what is and isnt suitable etc...

I know not everyone is in a position to have lovely timber stabling or barns etc but this book said not to use metal containers and they are cold and do not hold heat in the winter and act as ovens in the summer?!?!?

obviously there will be plenty of people out their that have metal stabling i dont want to offend anyone just mentioning what this book said...

If you are looking to buy one try contacting local transport companies they may have some that are no longer suitable for their use but still in good condition.... especially now with the fuel costs / credit crunch a lot of transport companies are struggling and they may want to sell their unused containers... they would also be able to deliver to you for a fee...

We have them as tack rooms at our yard - seem to work well for this as nice and secure and dry but can't imagine they would be right for stabling - wrong shape (long and narrow) and not enough ceiling height for my liking either.

I used an 8 x 20 ft one for 10 years. (My Dad was in shipping!) It was lined with plyboard so the temp fluctuation wasnt a problem. The floor was wooden so I used a fresh shovel full of sawdust every night under my straw to absorb the pee.
My nag at that time was 15hh and she coped well in it but not sure I'd want anything bigger in there. The height was 10 ft so no prob.

My Dad shut one half of the split container door and attached a door frame to the 'open' bit on which we hung a solid 4ft high stable door.

There are companies who specialise and deal in new and second hand ones. Google them.

Ooohh I've tried but I'm failing miserably, thank you all for your replies, it's much appreciated.

I did have a thought about building a huge barn (subject to planning) and having the stables inside as well as the hay storage etc, But obviously I have to think of cost as I not only have all water and electric to be put in but fencing as well, this is not going to be a cheap job so if anybody can come up with any cheap options that they know of I'd be eternally in your debt :D

A little update on things, I am now looking for barns now and obviously a general cost of them, does anyone know of anyone who has had one built recently and can give me a rough price and recommendations of companies, I keep getting the timber barn companies but I need something stronger and cheaper, can you help?

We built 2 stables with a timber frame and metal profile sheeting for under £600. We have then built another 2 sheds the same for around £700 all in. A used 20' container is around £1000.00 including vat and delivery much better building something yourself its easy and cheap. All you do is make sure your posts are concreted in and then u build your frame around it.

Hi Jessie,

We just had a mini barn containing 4 stables +feed/tack room + wide central corridor built. The cost was about £11.5k (incl VAT delivery and erection) but we had quite a lot of extra upgrades (extra thick kickboards, sliding door at front, portal frame construction, external top half doors, sarking board lining under the roof) which added more so it ended up as £15k ish (incl VAT delivery and erection).

I know that sounds crazy money but it is a barn so you can store hay etc if you dont use all the stables.

Whatever you build for however much, bear in mind the extra hidden cost of the base, drainage, water and electric. Esp if your site isnt level. All this probably added £6-8k onto the costs of ours - on top of the stables costs, I couldnt believe how much a load of concrete cost, and how many we needed....:-(

I do know lots of peeps who use a field shelter and then stick stable doors on the front though, would be a lot cheaper but we are v exposed location so need luxury accom for the pampered ones.

We used Saltire to build ours (we are in NE Scotland), and they were pretty good. Would use them again.
