Ok, so Dixie is here and settled in *yay*

Gratuitous Doodles pic (heh heh heh)

Which saddle do you use and why ? ? This the one thing that i need to get right for her. She`s apparently 13hh (more like 12hh lol) ... But she does have a long-ish back, (it`s easily as long as Coby`s) ... she is chunky, flat backed and takes a 5ft 6" Rug.

I am a 10/12 (probably closer to a 12) but i do have a big butt  (no really, thats not me putting myself down, i do have a padded backside lolol)

Soooooo all you adults who ride ponies, what is a good combination to try ? And pics obviously help too :)

Here`s a pic of her in Cobys standard length Freeform. I had put the Mattes pad underneath but it was definitely too long with the Mattes, i could maybe try another treeless pad ? Which Treeless pads are shorter ?

Do you think the Freeform itself looks ok on her ?

I haven't a clue about treeless saddles, but that does look too big. However, perfectly prepared to be corrected by someone who actually knows what they're talking about

Are you wanting treeless or treed? Just if it's treeless you're after I'll go and skulk back into my corner :giggle:

Her back looks a similar size to Ziggy's. For treeless you could try the Barefoot Cheyenne, it was a good fit. We went in the end for treed, a Kent and Masters 17" GP extra wide which we both like very very.

I would prefer treeless, just as i struggle with a lower back problem that has been exacerbated by riding in a tree`d saddle, but in the Freeform both myself and Coby are comfortable (he lets me know in no uncertain terms when he`s not happy with something) ... So hoping to be treeless for Dixie too, but won`t rule out a tree`d saddle as ensuring she is happy and comfortable is my main priority xx

I have a 15.5" Ideal Classic for my 12hh Dartmoor and a Thorowgood T6 3D Cob 16" for my 13.2hh welsh cob.

I am 5ft 2 and now a bum size 10-12 but was a 12-14 when i bought the saddles.

Hard to see if the saddle is too big from the angle of the photos, got any side on pics?

Sensation saddles are very good for short backs and adult riders, The standard saddles are 19 inches long and the seat is a good 17-17.5 inch.

I fit lots of adults on ponies with treed saddles so can answer questions if you'd like to try a treed for any reason - you'll need a wide head in the tree (not an upside down V but a U), a flat panel and flat tree (a flat seat will give you more room) and a short panel - most synthetics etc have a panel that sticks out beyond the cantle which won't help. If you have a saddle made you can have an "extended" cantle which means you keep the panel size of the smaller tree but have more room for you. You may also find that you will need a deeper panel to stop the back of the saddle sinking - often a relatively light rider will be in balance in the saddle but a taller and or heavier rider will end up nearer the cantle which then drops, hence the need for more rear panel.

I have one client with a Icelandic, a full up 13.3hh, that although it was long (at least a 6'rug I'd guess), had a short ribcage and could only take a 15" saddle, The rider was 15 stone! Our only solution was a ReactorPanel flexible panel saddle with a 17" seat.

I haven`t got any side on pics as she kept following me bless her, i do however have a short video where i got her side on at about 13 seconds if you pause it, does that help ?

Thank you for the explaination Sbloom, much appreciated. I`m going to try and fit her with a tree less first and foremost, but if i fail there i will certainly come back and pick your brains. The problem we have up here is a serious lack of decent saddle fitters, or barefoot trimmers .... I`d trust my own judgement before a lot of the so called professionals around here having seen first hand the problems they`ve caused.

Shame you`re so far away

barefoot cheyenne cmes in size '0' which might be just about ok. treeless saddles can be a tad longer than treed saddles.

my 12.3 with a rather long back takes a size 1 barefoot cheyenne - the equivalent of a 17" treed saddle

my 12.1hh (shorter back!) has a 16" thorowgood T4 ponyclub saddle, which *just* fits my behind.

i'd get a fitter/saddler out, to be on the safe side! you dont want to end up with something too long that ends up too far forward to fit.

Thorowgood cob or cob plus? Native saddle people are meant to be good and my friend loves her wintec wide

She is just short of 12hh... (just a few examples of saddle sizes! Not her saddles!)

I`m very interested in these, technically i could use it on them both. Can i ask which model you have ? and do you have a photo of it please ?

Thanks

The Cheyenne is another that keeps cropping up when i ask people about ponies and treeless .... i`ll have a look on ebay i think.

I actually officially cover Lincs, though the NE of Lincs IS a long way away :ninja:. Do give me a shout if you'd like to try treed and I'll see what I can do.

Thankyou, that`s re-assuring to know

PFB you are a star .... lol  ... I was thinking of an Easytrek but haven`t heard many good reviews about them. What did you think of it ?

I have the the Libra Trek in the 17", i was thinking of getting a 15" ... I`d just worry if mah butt would fit in it comfortably enough, you`re a tiny wee dot .. i`m a bit bigger than you.

I do like the western lololol i just don`t think i`d be able to ride in it very well. So a 14" western is the equivalent of a 16" english ? You learn something new every day. Do they all work like that then ?? so a 15" western would be the equivalent of a 17" english ? ..... I did always think that the american saddles were just made really small :redcarded: :giggle: (i know i know ... lolol)

My Exmoor mare, Frayne, is 12.2hh and built like a tank! She has a long back (takes a 5'6" rug), very wide and flat. Since 2007 we have been enjoying our Libra Trec - 17". I am a size 10-12 (5'5"), but more like a 12-14 in the bottom department!

It is a fantastic saddle - done hundreds of miles on it, over extreme terrain at times. I have a HM Hipsaver on it (memory foam ), which makes it even more comfy (I have Fibromyalgia and Hyper-Mobility Syndrome, so in constant pain, and I couldn't ride in a treed saddle now).

I have used various pads - but now just have a thin Stik-It pad, which stops it from moving in any direction, or a Polypad for short rides around the block. I have tried most of the expensive specialist treeless pads - but found them heavy, too big and definitely not worth the money. Perhaps I am lucky with Frayne - she has had no issues with rubbing (and any slipping on steep hills has been solved with the Stik-It pad) or soreness.

One of my friends uses a Freeform on her big cob and they love it - they look very smart and comfortable. That saddle does look ok on your pony - you need to remember that a treeless saddle is soft at the back, so as long as you are fitting the saddle, you will not be putting pressure on their loins. Your pony is the best judge. How does she react when you tack up, how does she move on the lunge/ridden, how do you feel when riding?

Just get out and enjoy some rides together!

My lovely pink saddle (now a lot faded!).
