As riders, we often face perfectionism. How does this affect your overall performance and enjoyment of riding?

I don't think it's helpful a lot of the time and can easily lead to poor training techniques that leave rider and horse frustrated and tense. There's a difference between very good and perfect, not least that with two imperfect parties acting together the latter just isn't possible! Aim to be better, yes, but keep the goal attainable.

Not remotely a perfectionist but I expect basic manners. I have some no nos. they must be good with vet farrier and stand still to be mounted. Loading is also a must. No barging pushing or being arsy. Apart from that they have carte blanche to be free to do what they like.

In terms of riding i only require basic obedience and we can discuss routes on the way. I require bravery in traffic and will do all i can to instill trust and therefore being bold enough to stand and face a fearsome lorry. Moving sideways also required. Apart from that they can carry themselves however is comfy for them, though i tend to ride western.

I completely agree. There is definitely a difference between very good and perfect, and we should always keep that in mind. It's important not to get so focused on trying to achieve perfection that it hinders our progress. What methods do you use to stay motivated and keep advancing while maintaining realistic expectations?

Perfectionism and me, nah. I'm a moment to moment, if it looks okay (ish) kinda rider. I'm not going to the Olypmics. I'll leave the perfect riding to others. Then I can watch them!
That's a great attitude to have! I'm curious, what led you to this outlook?

I don’t want perfection, I want a partnership based on communication and listening. Perfection comes at the cost of the other party with no compromise, no teamwork but with a brick wall while the rider screams “resistance is useless”. No thank you.
I completely agree. Perfection is a myth! 💯

Perfect is different things to different people. To me it's a relaxed pootle on a sunny/frosty morning, chatting to the odd walker, listening to the birds, maybe seeing the forest ponies grazing (at a distance!) and getting home without incident!
LOVE THIS 🌟 It definitely sounds like you have your own definition of perfect.
