October Chat!

Nobody seems to be talking much currently. I posted a couple of times on the September thread to keep the conversation going but nobody replied or added to. Maybe the regular posters just dont have anything to say.
If we dont use the forum we will loose it soon i fear. I wish that all these new people who i keep seeing join, would join in a bit more. They seem to just come and go.
Im starting to come on here less and less as theres just nothing to engage me.

Look how grey he’s getting 👀😳

Hank was a rescue so only ever had an estimated age, he didn’t have any white when he came to me 10 years ago estimated at 5-8 years old (goodness I can’t believe it’s been that long!) I don’t often lift his forelock so it was a bit of a shock tonight just how grey he’s getting.

I didnt post as we were away in Amsterdam and now we have Covid, so I am feeling ill, fed up and bleary eyed. But in the Prinsenhof In Delft I photographed a pic called preparation for the Battle of Nieuwpoort 1600 which shows quite a variety of bridle design,ECW_8232.JPG

Had a horrible few weeks, losing Suki kittie due to the builders leaving a door open, having bowel cancer threat but thankfully the colonoscopy - please never again - on Monday found polyps so they have been removed and hopefully that is the end of it. Mum's dementia getting worse and covid in the next ward in hospital. Rehoming Sapphire as she has had another fall. Not a great time.

I'm hoping this time next year it will all just be a bad memory but just now everything is too over whelming.

I got to yard this afternoon and yo caught me. I would like to think she was trying to be helpful. I know I am too sensitive but I was left thinking I can just not cope and this will never have a good outcome.

I messaged my friend and asked if she was in for a cuppa. She was. She has my therapy dog. 45mins later with indi sat on my lap doing whatever she does I felt better. That wee dog was smuggled in to the psych ward when I was there a long time and she is just amazing. The other 3 are always pleased to see me but my lap is indi's so they are relegated to leaning!

Back to yard and my other amazing friend cut through the hysteria that was welling up again. Smile and nod at yo. Don't allow robin to push my buttons (he threw a complete tantrum last night and I walked away. By the time she got there he was snoozing, eating and being polite) and we take a day at a time.

I am so lucky to have such good friends.

Robin is pushing my buttons. I think yo was trying to be helpful mainly but it really wasn't helping. She was saying I'm not rotating the pens enough, I shouldn't given him hay as he hadn't eaten it and it would waste it and she doesn't approve of using field mats as they will blow away.

Dont know about the horse but she would be pushing my buttons for sure saying that to me.
I thought robin was settling having got him out for a bit. I hope hes not getting bored of it already. Theres a long way to go. Youve got this.

He was. Till yesterday and he threw the toys when I brought him in early as it was wet. He was ok till I went to my car to get feed and he let rip. This morning he was being dramatic going out. He had decided something in the shed was scarey. So he dashed through the gate, spun round, almost got away from me which would have been a disaster. Luckily he got to end of rope and stopped. He does this very occasionally and we go back through the gate and try again. Improbably should have done that but I didn't want to risk him getting away and setting off up the field. He then spun round and through the electric gates into the pen. I wasn't clever enough to plan the pen gates well enough. After the 3 rd spin i told him off and I then was a monster for getting cross and he was terrified of me, snorting and rolling his eyes. He leapt in the air a few times but he can't actually go anywhere so he rolled and flattened the divots again!

The friend said yesterday when she got there he was totally fine. I know he sometimes likes to push me so I react then he can over react and I feel bad.

Yo. Well she is tricky at times. I think she does mean well just her manner can be difficult. I have looked for somewhere else but can never find anything suitable. The yard is actually really nice and suits us.

Ergh what a headache. Have you considered putting him on some calmer just to take the edge off while he’s on tiny turnout? It might make it easier for both of you.

Agree, and I've been posting less too, I realise. I've even drifted away for a week or so here and there. Something has changed, but I can't put my finger on it.

I've not been around much as I have literally been working seven days a week for the last 3 weeks. And now I'm just back from a long weekend in Vienna with my bestie. It was great, what a lovely city and such friendly people. We walked miles and miles and saw several Klimts...

...and yes, we went to a training session at the Spanish Riding School. It was brilliant. They start with the horses who are nearly ready to join the team, and you can see how they are developing their specialisms - not all of them do everything, especially the airs above the ground. Then they show you "the young wild ones" - the 4 to 6 year olds, who are mostly dapple or iron grey and who have remarkable powers of concentration but are just baby horses! One had a tantrum on his way in, one tried to kick the trainer with the lunge whip asking him to engage his hocks, and all the others were ridden in a very visible way - hands moving, heels and legs moving - not the preternatural stillness of the riders of advanced horses.

And the smell was lovely.

I'm back to work now and still haven't ridden but I'm going out tomorrow!

We cant continue as we are, sooner or later the site will get pulled. I dont know the ins and outs of running a site but it must cost Mike and with doing upgrades etc. I think he gets revenue from the ads and thats one way it brings people to the site/keeps it going and thats why we have to have them and hes done a great job keeping them unobtrusive on the site but if we dont attract new members that revenue will dry up and the site will surely get closed.

My understanding is that since covid horse ownership was on the increase because people have found they can work from home so the time they were travelling to work, means they can now use on horses instead. Surely people must have loads of issues and questions, we all know horse ownership isnt plain saling, so people must be browsing for answers. Its how i came across this site many years ago.

I remember when that other site was set up with people migrating when subs were brought in here. That site had loads of followers and many went from here. I did join but my preference was here as the site was much more pleasing to the eye. I didnt use the other site regularly and one day i found it was gone, i didnt know anyone off there so never found out why it went.

I am sure this site will go if we dont get more people. Maybe those that are joining and then arent posting are whats keeping the site going. Maybe theres some revenue from those. Its just ashame there not sticking around to chat.

Often new riders are kids, and they tend to ask lots of less informed questions and from a no money perspective and often that is met here with troll comments. Often the answer is get a professional, and it’s the right answer, but not necessarily something a teenager has control of and the conversation between existing more seasoned riders isn’t something they can really participate in. I think that probably puts off a lot of actual new riders, other than the few more mature that come through.
It would be a terrible shame to loose the forum, but there isn’t much input on most things nowadays which is a shame.

Out of the European cities I've visited so far, Vienna is my favourite, surpassing Paris and Rome by a mile. We were in a hotel on the route that the horse and carriage outfits passed every morning - the most well cared for teams I've ever seen. Wonderful sight to see from our window with our morning coffee. We're off to Venice next weekend, so shall see if it can compete! Must add, that Bruges came a close second.

@Huggy I liked Venice, but we did go off season and stay in a hotel on a nearby island. I think Venice in season and/or staying in the city would be too much for me, I don't like crowds or a lack of space. Even some of the side streets were making me uneasy, they're so narrow and built up so high that I felt they were closing in on me. But the architecture is amazing!

For several years we exchanged homes with people who lived in Venice. Venetians like to escape the heat in August by coming to London and we loved going there. We also exchanged one year with people from Florence. But my brother used to go to Venice in Autumn and it was often mistry
