Just curious, my sisters hairy cob always gets mites.

She's been lazy with treating him over the last 6 months and I noticed that he was really bad again and his legs get swollen flaps under the hair.

So she took him to a new vet today (based literally opposite her new yard) and he refused to give him the Dectomax injection (which he had always had for years) - I know its not licensed for horses so it's a little complicated.

Anyway vet says treat with Frontline - now I am unsure how successful and expensive this method would be to clear the infestation that he has.

Personally I think it would be best to start again, have the dectomax via another vet, pos clip the feather and if my sister is wanting to let it grow back then she will have to put more effort in to cleaning his legs and then frontline treatment and also pig oil and sulphur as we used to....

Your thoughts?

Izzy got mites when I first got him and he had the Frontline treatment. It worked pretty quickly and we didn't need to clip his feather, but his weren't really bad. Have pig oil and sulphured ever since and never had a problem with them coming back.

Thanks for reminding me to do the dreaded deed with the pig oil this weekend. He is overdue and he HATES it.

Mmmm, strange they are refusing dectomax and recommending frontline which you would have to lie about and say it is for your dog from my experience?
I used dectomax first time and wasnt impressed at the cost or success of it.
It happened again last summer and I researched and bought frontline spot on (saying I had a huge dog) I used a tube per leg, otherwise I would had to have gone via the vet for the spray and again lie that it was for a dog- plus clipping feather which I wasn't prepared or able to do.
I treated twice with spot on, to allow time for the new eggs to hatch. Since then I've always pig oiled and will never let it lapse - I pig oil every time after the trimmer has been.

Over use of decr creates resistance so eventually mites won't be killed by it. Vet has no guarantees your sister will keep on top of it, an by not giving the "easy fix" it would force her to manage it properly I guess?

I'd POS, as frontline won't kill mites, well it didn't in my experience. I've found the POS to be much better. I did clip his legs one year and I'm tempted to do it again, however I found when I did clip, he developed (or possibley he had it before but I just never noticed it :o) mallanders. yeck.

Just beware when using frontline. I seem to remember that not all formulations of frontline are the same. Isn't there a frontline spot on and a frontline combo??????

Also is it cat size or dog size you use on each leg?

Not sure:unsure:

I dont think you can argue with the vet really, neither Frontline or Dectomax are technically for horses so they can be excused for refusing. I thinkyour sister needs to crack on with the PO&S, perhaps more frequently till its under control and then try to keep on top of it.
I have a Shire and although it is a pain (he dances about like a tit every time, god knows why, he hasnt had a single itchy bit since I got him!) its just one of them crappy jobs that had to be done!

I know people who have used Frontline, with varying degrees of success. The combo one is the prescription only version (rather than the cheaper one from pet shops) but I think the spray (also prescription only), rather than the spot on is better.

With my cob mare we have clipped her legs ( she is a show cob anyway ) and used Coopers Fly Repellent. They are really starting to look good now.

I was told by previous vet when I purchased Mr Cob, that just the large spot on frontline per leg would do the trick.

I was told by another vet (different horse!) when he had mysterious lumps appear on his legs, they were baby ticks and to spray with frontline the, and just brush it through. It cleared up, but as that particular horse didn't have feathers it was really easy to clear up and sort out.

i don't use frontline, dectomax or POS!! toby used to get the dectomax jab but then i started shampooing with a dermoline shampoo and spraying with equimins mite spray. We haven't needed the injection for the last 3 years.
