Minnie

I love the new vet. Old guys all the way!!
He was so good with Minnie. And afterwards we looked at the X rays together and he explained things.
In short though
99 percent sure it was keratoma. He sees no indications at all for cancer.
She'll be fine. Another x ray in 6 month :-)

Omg that's fab news! I'm so glad you've persevered Karin. I'm a sucker for being optimistic about these things. Glad to hear it's looking promising!

Thanks. I am so happy.
:)
Of course if this vet is right (and he is very experienced and well regarded) then the rookie vet was wrong ... and put me through a heck of an ordeal for nothing. Including the description of how the cancer would invade her whole hoof and how she was such a horrible horse to deal with that she was a really bad candidate for even trying. :(

Water under the bridge now. He was awesome and I feel really good about his skills.

WE WILL BE FINE!!!

Her hooves need to get in better shape but we will start riding again soon. :) She did fine on her lameness exam.

Being geeky can we have the long story if not too upsetting for you? Like how they tell the difference and what happens now? Will it go away or always be there? Sorry have followed your plight with interest!

And most of all... HOW DID SHE TRAILER!!!!!! Glad it went well xx

Good questions.
Difference between keratoma and cancer:
Vet says they just don't see that bone resorption in cancer. That bone resorption seen in the xray is typical for keratoma not cancer.

Is keratoma still there / will it come back :
We don't know. To see the presence and exact location of any remaining keratoma she would have to get an mri. That's a 9 hour round trip and 1800 dollars.
Good sign : bone resorption has not increased from last year's xray to yesterday's. Question is is it because she had a hole in her Hoof and the keratoma wasn't able to put pressure on the coffin bone. Or is it because keratoma was in fact completely removed.
Bad sign : that growth at toe. Vet says it could be due to scar tissue. It could resolve over time or there could always be a bump there. Time will tell. Xray in half a year to see if bone resorption is still going on (meaning keratoma is still there) or if bone resorption has halted. (coffin bone will not regrow but it's okay to have that little piece missing)

Trailering is fine now. I can take her places. She's so much more confident now than she was a year ago.

Vet left me with some excellent Trimming advice. He was really a very skilled and knowledgeable individual all around

Maybe I was wrong on the trailering. Perhaps I hurt her feelings taking her back to a vet?
When I go out in the morning she is usually first to come to me.
This morning she nickered at me very loudly (unusual and got me excited because it sounded like a greeting!) ... and then she turned around and walked away. LOL
Not sure what she was telling me?

Karin, I am crying sitting here - this is the first chance I have had to read your news and I am so, so happy for you.

Many long happy years to you and the beautiful Minnie!

THANK YOU ALL!

I forget to mention one bit of bad news... bad for Minnie that is.

Vet says she's overweight and being part Percheron is no excuse. The big girl has to go on a diet and shed 70 pounds... ouch. lol

The very best news, I can imagine just how happy you are feeling right now after all the doom and gloom.

Of course she is ignoring you...you had only asked her on and off the trailer, then you suddenly made her actually travel in the damn thing....she is sulking tis all!

I totally DID take her somewhere over the weekend: a lovely horse ranch with yummy grass to eat and funny cows to look at.

This was just a little bit farther, a little less fun and a little less yummy lol

Tada... remember that newmarket bitless padded bridle I got at 50% off when things with Minnie were still iffy?
Well I dyed it and it turned out great. I've dyed stuff before and it always turned out crappy.
This time I followed directions though, used deglazer, pro oil dye and worked the finish just like the peeps on the leathercraft boards described.
The dye job turned out totally even, no patches, no streaking, looks really good.
Let's just hope it doesn't wear off in funky patterns. lol
Unfortunately the harness dressing could only be bought in quart size. Looks like I can use it to refinish some of my super ancient bridles with it too though...
And best of all: remember when Minnie came back from the trainer and even bridling took a month or so to be accomplished again? She let me put on the new bridle without me even having to halter her beforehand

Wow Karin, what an ordeal! Glad to see her on the mend now, hope you get to the bottom of the problem once and for all.

She looks so different as well, really matured in her face, stunning girl.
