Measuring the thickness of a Sprenger bit?

Daffy's "new" bit came today, extremely quick, so very pleased.

But I'm convinced it's an 18mm, and the auction said 16mm, which is what I wanted. I'm worried that it will be a little bit thick for Daffy.

Can somebody tell me exactly how it should be measured? Ideally with a photo, so I know I'm measuring the right part.

Do you think 2mm will make a the difference? He doesn't seem particularly fussed about what I have in his mouth as long as there's no curb and it isn't a mullen mouth.

I just dug out his old full cheek, and I think we'll be ok on the thickness. I wonder if it (and the rings!) just look huge because I've been using a bridoon lately!

But it would still be useful to know exactly where to measure the thickness.
