I'm not sure if you still read posts but I would like to thank you for finally pushing me in the right direction.
I'd been debating for weeks whether to put my 11yr old TB ex-racehorse into a pelham or to keep plugging away with the snaffle.I finally took the plunge yesterday after he had a rearing paddy which resulted in me being ditched and dragged half way round the arena after my foot caught in the stirrup.I'd had enough of hauling on the reins and trying to get him to accept the bit.But every time I took up a contact in the school he would fight and fidget and go round 10 to the dozen!
I put him in a mullen mouth pelham with a fairly loose curb chain and after about 10 mins of the head going up and down he settled and went straight on the bit and I didn't have to try to pull his head in.We only practised in walk as we both got a bit shook up I didn't want to scare him (and myself!
) anymore.
I don't want to prattle on but he used to have these rearing fits since i bought him about a year and a half ago.But hasn't had any for 8 months till monday.I dont know what set him off but i was riding him in a mullen mouth myler style eggbutt.I am having a saddler and a dentist out in a few weeks to check this is not physical problem lurking.In the last few weeks he has started to nap more and just stopping dead,after trying all possible ways to ditch me the only way he could get me off was to rear.He has always been nappy and whinnies constantly when hacked out by himself.
So I just wanted to say thanks and hopefully in a few weeks time he should be behaving better and i will let you and everyone else who has read my other posts know how he is getting on.If I'm still alive that is!!! LOL
