laminitis now abscess

Did Vet give reason , is he treating for the abcess, lammi or both? if it is lammi or both then we had the same thing with our little man which is why we are have had the muscular problems - poor you , all you can do is follow what your vet is saying at the mo, just make sure you know what they are treating for so you have all the facts when you speak to your farrier.........do let us know how you get on.......

vet treating him for both, lami is getting better but the vet said bobs feet have taken a battering, just dont understand why so bad he was fine then on the 1st of jan went lame on the 2nd of jan i called the vet so it wasnt like i had left it to see if he get better without calling the vet, i just dont understand, the vet said y-day he has spoken to my farrier just wish the farrier would speak to me, re-bobs and the vet not said much of what he has spoken to the farrier about, so i think thats worried me, will try the farrier today again to see what he says? farrier was only out just over two weeks ago to shod bobs feet but they need doing again now the hoof is growning over the heart shoes. ( thats one good sign the hoof is growning) isnt it...
hows your boy getting on? how old is he

Its good that your Vet and Farrier are talking, sometimes they forget that we are not all as knowledgeable about whats going on as they are and if they explained things better we wouldn't get in such a state over it, its worrying enough but easier if you know what you are dealing with. The hoof tends to grow more with lami hence needing more frequent visits from your Farrier , sounds as though they are waiting for his feet to settle, hope you get to speak to the Farrier today sometimes they speak in an easier to understand language and make sure you ask all the questions and understand what is happening it will make it easier for you, does sound as though they are getting on top of it now though, don't beat yourself up about it, these things happen, I watch mine like a hawk and have had similar since January, somethings just take longer than others....... let us know how you get on with farrier........

My little man is only 4, he is coming on leaps and bounds now, had a small walk in hand down the village this morning and he was reluctant to cut his normal walk out short, we will build it up everyday, introduced additional stretchs this morning and he is responding really well...

keep smiling

Chin up, I have been here and got the T shirt too!

If the vet says keep him in then keep him in with a nice deep bed. If your worried the Laminitis Trust Helpline will advise you also. Sadly, like others have said, Laminitis and abcesses go hand in hand. It is a long job but, well worth it in the end.

I put lots of toys in for my horse to help with the boredom the equiball is great as you can put Spillers High Fibre Cubes in it (great for Laminitics) TC had hours of fun with his (check out the video on my youtube page) Jolly Balls or a half deflated Football also work.

I also recommend a good hoof supplement if he has had Laminitis Formula4Feet is available from the Laminitis Trust and they ship next day delivery at no charge.

Remember you are doing whats best for your horse and you have had some great advise from others on here, so your not alone.

Take care and good luck

As with all the other replies, just keep going and try not to beat yourself up, Lemme was very supportive to me when Lucy was poorly with abscess. I cried today as I watched our little old lady have her shoes finally put back on and a lovely good trim, it was a sight I never thought I'd see again! Although Lucys abscess has now drainined he has said this could appear again at any time due the vunerability of her feet ....Its true that the toes grow very quickly with lami and then splay out, hence very regular trimming, we can only go a maximum of 5 weeks, but have been known to only manage 3! Keep going an I hope your poor boy will soon be feeling more like his old self.

that is so good to hear your little man coming on,

well still not heard from farrier but foned vet before bobs not to good this after noon he has gone very lame putting no weight on the left foot the one with the abscess, the growns that where coming from him i was in tears the vet is coming out tomorrow, so hopefully he may try and drain it again,
fingers x

Sounds like that abcess really does need to be found and drained, the pain for BOb will be awful and thats what he is telling you, once it starts draining you will be suprised how quickly he starts to get relief, my vet would not explore the foot for the abcess , as he said no professional pride its a Farriers Job, my farrier found it within minutes once the vet was satisfied the foot was stable enought to be dealt with it looks as though this is what your vet is doing, but still a long job. Bob needs all the TLC you can give him at the mo so you need to be strong for him.. plenty of smiles (even though inside your not) and cuddles .. do let us know how you get on with the Vet, will be thinking of you both.......... hes a lucky boy to have you.

hi
oh dear re-pc :( hate wen that happens, i text farrier to see if he could come and trim bobs feet but the vet said they where fine so when the farrier did text me back after 5days of trying to get him just told him the vet said that the feet dont need trimming, bobs is very lame today but not to call vet out re-abscess, got to vet back around wed/thur if bobs is on 3 lags, just not nice to watch been with him all morin i go back around 2.00 to give him his lunch, :) just dont no what else to do, i think once the abscess is out and drained then i think the vet is looking to get him out into a small section of his paddock, i no i keep saying it but just want him out now his so grumpy which it not him and hes starting to nip i do shout at him and tell him off for doing it but them i feel bad??? and then he gives you kiss,, how is your little boy doing?

Poor Man, he is going through the wars isn't he....... if hes no better by Tuesday night I would be ringing the vet and getting him to come on Wednesday , meantime if you think he is getting worse then I would ring them anyway, the bute is for pain relief and hes not on much, understand why . What has he left you doing to try and mature it? has he explored the foot at all for the abcess or if it doesn't mature is he going to get the farrier in has he said? Is there any signs of it coming at the Coronet at all? We were 10days before the vet would let the farrier explore for the abcess in which time all we could do was hot tub for 2 mins twice a day and like Bob it was awful to watch, farrier located it quickly and he came off the bute and then the process of draining but the pain relief itself is dramatic.

Mine is coming on nicely now, getting longer walks out and turnout and his muscles are building up well, he struggled this morning a little against this horrible wind but gets better the more mobile he is. Just a time thing now.

Do let us know how things are progressing, fingers crossed that abcess matures soon......

just been to bobs hes not good just gave him half a bute, hes allready had one this morin first thing, do you understand why the vet told me to take him off two bute and only give him one ? when hes in ,more pain now? .
vet told me to do nothing, tubbing it he says dose nothing maybe after it has been drained to keep it clean, but am keeping it clean now useing hiby strub and warm water, did it help use after tubbing his foot? or could it be that with bobs having his two front feet sore (one sore than other) thats why he telling me not to do anythink because it will be hard for him to stand??

Bute slows down the abcess forming, so as far as I can tell ( only my opinion) is that the vet is trying to control the pain whilst at the same time trying to get the abcess to break....... a fine line I would think. You must feel helpless if you can do nothing to help other than give pain relief...... he will be putting weight onto all his other limbs to take the weight off his bad one, is he standing with his rear limbs pushed under his bum and one foot pointed with the toe just touching the floor, both fronts pushed forward or hopping from one to the other

Mine was on bute, 1 a day which I gave half in the morning and half at night (12 hourly intervals) but mine is only 9hh, but the vet was more concerned in pain control and ensuring foot stability initially than getting the abcess, only when he was happy did he allow the Farrier to look for the abcess, and only once found did he take him off the bute.

Hot tubbing didn't bring my mans to maturity what he did seem to get was some relief , albeit short lived, but the danger is softening the soles bearing in mind the lami, sounds as if this is what your vet is worried about and trying to balance treatment.......

If you feel that he worse and that is extra pain causing it then I would ring the vet and tell him this plus anything else that is worrying you that has changed since he last came and see what he says, even if it is more of the same at least you will have some re-assurance........

thank you that all make sence, will see how he is when i got tonite and in morin, with me giving him extra bute, (hes 14" 2) (which now i should not have done :( ) just when you see them in pain, just want to cry for them and they can not tell you , WEll THEY DO IN THERE WAY.! hes not off his food? did your go off his food

No, takes at lot for mine to go off food, I would be really worried if he stopped eating! he was only allowed Hay and dengie hi-fi to put his meds in, but we had to make sure his net was not allowed to go empty to ensure his gut kept going, once we were treating for the abcess we were then allowed to start him on feed, put him onto happyhoof and he is doing really well on it, maintaining his weight as we wanted and he is starting to get a nice shape now with the exercise he is getting, I would like to get another 2kg off him hoping I can do it with exercise and don't want to mess his feed about anymore now. Had to worm him which gave me a small panic for a couple of days incase it set off the lami but touch wood all seems okay on that front. Will see how he is tonight, OH is letting him out of his small paddock for an hour into the larger paddock just for a stretch, was able to let him into it for 2 1/2 days over the weekend but back at work now and feel better if he only has the hour when I am not around.

leaving work in 5 mins, so will catch up tomorrow, lets hope you have some progress.......

bobs is on happyhoof and 4 slices of haylage aday, hes lost weight but needed to , and looks great for it, vet wanted him on hay??? mine dosent do hay :) but the stuff we have its ok not to sweet, take care will email tomorrow and thanks for all your help

My mare got a series of abscesses after her lami - its very common, I'm afraid. I was told they have to move to get the circulation moving and the abscess draining. Really not good to let it build up inside. Also bute slows down the draining process. I know how awful it is to see your horse in pain (my girl was on 3 legs) but it makes sense to me that movement and circulation in the hoof is key.. Soak in warm salty water twice a day and walk in hand as many times as you both can bare. Do you have access to a grass free area, soft area (like an arena) that he can spend a good chunk of the day (but don't feed hay off the sand direct)? Can the shoes come off? Sorry - its very hard to see your lovely boy in pain.

hi thanks for your message it all helps to have advise, the vet told me to keep him in hes been in now since the 2nd of jan, only been out went vet wants to see him walk, oh and he opened his gate to his stable last monday and headed to in paddock to have a run around, which was great but he soon came to a stop in pain? so walked him back slow to his stable, but he had 15mins of freedom:) , he has hearts shoes on because of his laminitis, the vet said call him when his very lame ie, on 3 legs,, hes holding it up and then puts in down for a few sec's but then up again, i gave him extra bute this after noon which now i no i should not have done, but hate seeing him the way he is he 20 years old dosent look it at all hes in great condison, coat shines ,,

Obviously don't want you to go against your vets advice - so sorry if I'm confusing matters. My vet also told me to go down the deep bed, bute road - which I did for a month. Then I switched vets! Sought out more advice from my farrier and researched loads on lami. There is another school of thought from the traditional vet one and its up to you to decide which one is best for you and your boy. Have you had x-rays done? Do you know if his pain is now from the lami still or if its now the abscess alone causing him pain - they are very painful. Slightly suprised at the heartbar shoes when he's on box rest anyway. If he still needs support a popular treatment is strapping on pads = support plus movement + circulation. You can also get fab soaking boots which have a very padded sole - they can be left on 24hrs and it would make his poor hoof more comfortable plus hopefully encourage the rat bag abscess to come down and out! All the best to you both x.

PS It could actually be a very good sign that he's onto 3 legs now - abscess nearing surface...

Oops just re-read your message - he's not on 3 legs, you've to call vet when he is. Gotcha
