My knee is getting more and more unstable, and I'm really not sure what to do
I've been thinking for a few months now about getting a knee brace, but no one seems able to point me in the right direction. What I could do with is an occupational therapist who specialises in riding who can help me test a few and fit them, as a badly fitted brace or support can do more harm than good, but my NHS OT says that since riding isn't "essential" I can't have a brace on the NHS, and since I want it for riding, she doesn't know how fitting it would differ.
I'm quite prepared to pay for one (within reason, as we're beyond broke!) but I want some advice on what the best brace would be for me and my disability, and for the activities I want to do with it. I hesitate to go to the local RDA, as I was once told it would cost me a fair bit to have an assessment done with their physiotherapist and if they don't think my horse is suitable, they can refuse to help me  I normally try to stick to dealing with people who know me and how my disability affects me because I find it so frustrating trying to explain things to new people.
I also feel that the RDA deal on a daily basis with people with far worse conditions than mine and that they might feel I'm wasting their time :o

Any thoughts on where else I can go to for advice?

Without knowing the mechanics of your unstable knee it's hard to know whether this will help. I had a major op last year because of a recurrent dislocation of my left patella but prior to that I used to wear a ProSport neoprene rubber/nylon support which I think I may have bought from Boots for about £20.00.

As long as I was careful getting on not to twist my knee and making sure I put my weight down evenly when getting off I found this really effective. Having said that my knee never came out when I was riding and I think it may have even helped to strengthen it.

I looked into knee supports for riding a fair bit, but have not yet found one that is ideal. The neoprene ones don't offer enough stability for me and the ones with sidebars are not very comfy in the saddle.
The best one I have found is called Softec Genu. For me it does not work for "serious" riding, though - I feel it forces my lower leg away from the horse. But it keeps me reasonably pain free for hacking or pottering round on the not-so -good days.
Let me know when you find a knee brace that does the job! :)

i used to run track and i did the 2mi and that concrete track is murder on a knee that is already bad i used a muller support type deal when i ran and it helped alot while and after i ran

I know this thread is old but I sometimes wear a normal neoprene knee brace when riding, but find when i have stirrups at jumping length it's more comfortable to take it off?
