Does anyone on here either use one of these for towing or know someone who does?

We need something that can tow 2 tonne (thats horses and trailer combined)but be used as a family/long distance car too.

ETA - weight is actually 1.8 tonnes max

I heard that the Kia won tower of the year? perhaps for caravans, but still...:p
I have recently bought a freelander 2 which i think has similar towing weights

the sorrento is MUCH more powerful than a freelander. The sorrentos are big, beefy tow vehicles capable of pulling almost the same as a disco. Newer models (2007+) actually have the same tow capacity as the disco/defender/rangerover. a sorrento or a terracan would be top of my list for a tow vehicle come family run around. Or possibly a rexton, they offer refinement and the 3500kg tow capacity. All offer good value for money second hand too.

Sorry but i disagree that it is 'MUCH more powerful than a freelander 2'. the sorrento has a towing capacity of 1787kg and the freelander 2 is 1770kg??? thats hardly any difference at all? the freelander 2 has been likened to a baby disco as it has a lot of torque.
I'd see and test drive as many as you can and work out what is most economic for you. The Kia is very good so ive heard though :)

i don't know where you got your statistics  they certainly are not those quoted on the kia site, or the excellent kerbweight site.

2003-2007 sorrentos have a max tow weight of 2800kg, perfectly adequate for towing a 505 and two horses

the 2007+ sorrentos have a max tow weight of 3500kg, identical towing capacity to the daddy of the tow vehicles, the disco.

turns out the auto models have the higher capacity, the manual models have a max tow weight (you are looking for braked trailers) of 3000kg, still legal to tow even a 510/511 and 2 horses).

freelanders, depending on engine, have a max tow weight of 2000kg, illegal for towing a 505 but legal for the super lightweight trailers like the chevals.

This website is a super reference guide to tow weights and is very accurate

and remember, the MAX tow weight of your vehicle must equal or exceed the max LAIDEN weight of your trailer, whether you are towing it full or not. Former NR member BlueWicked did have a sticky on this subject which i think is still in place...

Had a Sorento for 5years and was fabulous towing (auto gearbox too). Was a bit heavy on diesel on our hills but great to drive and a real carrier. It can tow 2800kg so ok for 2 horses. Had Disco previously and that could tow 3500kg. Both were great towers, but the Sorento a great general car. Now off towing and gone 'green' with a small car!!
