I'd say the horses/ponies are well used to being ridden on the ice! I think they use special shoes with a tripod-like stud arrangement that helps them keep a good grip on the ground

Its what they do in Iceland,i dont think its "bad" but its not something i would do with mine! Unfortunately about a year ago 6 horses fell through the ice at a competition-they were all ok but it was awful to watch.

I lived in Finland for 6 months and was suprised how good the little icelandics were on the ice/snow and even had a go myself! was so much fun!
They are used to the conditions and think accidents (where i was) were few and far between
