I felt I should join this thread as I haven't yet plucked up the courage to canter odin. Its so silly, I'm soo lucky he doesn't put a foot wrong. I have cantered a couple of times on school horses and really enjoyed it. I even survived an impromptu canter on my youngester who is now on loan as I was over horsed. Its so silly we had an excellent ride today and Od started to canter and I slowed him down... I really need to just go within maybe i'll have another bash tomorrow

Hiya

Im not sure why you are having problems with cantering (ie if your new or had a scare) but Its not silly. Every rider at some time gets a hang up about something at some point, hence this might be totally irelevant but...

My friend has recently got back in saddle after an accident. They horse was cantering and tripped and went on its knees they were both fine (don't panic though this horse had problems and it was a freak thing). But it scared her about cantering. She just could not do it, she tensed up and just went green at the thought. Anyway her daughter has lost some interest in the horse and she decided she would have to start again to ride this one or it would be a waste of a good horse. She had lessons to build up her confidence and it worked. After a few canters we could not stop her (literally, she was off round and round :D). She decided that she would make a deal with herself. She bought one of those straps for the front of the saddle (fits d-ring to d-ring) and said she would use it for 15 ride outs on her horse. It was a security blanket for her to ride where she had come off. She also wanted it incase she tensed up in the saddle and became unseated or unbalanced. It worked and after 15 rides she took it off. This might be an idea but set a limit as you don't want to become dependant on a security blanket. We ride out all the time now and theres no stopping her and she loves it. Good luck but try not to focus to much on it, it will just happen when your ready, and he sounds like a horse that would look after you :D

thanks

hey

Thanks for the reply he is a dream horse and always stops etc when ever you ask him, I'm also lucky that I have a horn on my western saddle to hang on too in an emergecy. I know if I do it once I'll really enjoy it I'm sure! I think I just get a bit frustrated as due to mobility probs I don't really ever improve but I just love riding and thats what matters :D I have actually bitten the bullet and booked a lesson for Odin and I at home on Saturday so I'll let you know how it goes !

Oh don't worry about not having cantering confidence! Its taken me five years of horse ownership and several small attempts before I finally got my mojo enough to canter without getting in a fuffle about it all! I don't have a great seat, and its not elegant to watch, but at least I'm getting back into practice with it. Don't feel pressured tho - just do little bits and build on that. If you're going to have lessons then make sure you express any fear about it to your instructor - you don't want to be pushed too much and scare yourself (which is what happened to me a long time ago). A good teacher will know how much work in canter to give you. Good luck!

it is odd though as on the riding school horse on a hack I was fine! I think its sort of because I just followed the instructor where as if I was out with on hack with my mother I sort of lead as she is new to riding:)

My friend could do it on the riding school horse. I think somewhere in your brain it says all riding school horses are safe. My Abby is riding school reject because she was too much! And my experience from a few riding schools is that they are the worst ones sometimes  Once you do it like you said that will be it. But don't beat yourself up if you don't. Ive been getting Abby back into work after injury since February and we have had nothing near a canter  But i know we will its just when shes ready. It will happen and im sure your riding is quite satisfactory, you stay on and enjoy it, there is not much more too it in my eyes. Keep us updated and enjoy it, either walk or gallop! :D

Know what you mean, I cantered on the beach on holiday (despite protesting at first!!!) and I really enjoyed it. But, I'd never have done it on Storm - not in a million years - why is this?!!! I think cos there was an instructor there and I guess the horse really knew her job I just went with it.
