A half breed is just an alternative cinch connector to an off-billet or tie strap. In essence it is a double strength off-billet since it is a doubled-over leather strap, whereas an off-billet isn't. The link here clearly shows how each connector works. A half breed is I think a good compromise between additional strength without bulk but I was a bit surprised to find a half breed on my show saddle!
