Chunky Monkey gang

Off to the sales this weekend. Need to buy a new ram. Going to need a deep pocket if the Wiltshire Horn Garwen sale price last week was anything to go by. Mind they still sell sheep in Guineas so I havent done the price conversion back yet.

Went with an empty trailer. Came back with an empty trailer. Feeling deflated right now.
Have a couple of leads to follow up on though. So watch this space.
we just had the Kelso tup sales last weekend and thousands of tups there lots of texels but other breeds too, prices were good there from what i heard

I've been shopping again today. Not a horse. Have actually spent some money this week. Not like last weeks ringside shop.
He's a big boy. Saw his dad who was very well built, proper stamp, so he has some good genetics in there.
He's in the shed for a couple of days isolation and to get use to me. I've brought my ram lambs up from the neighbours field to keep him company albeit in the pen next to him to get aquainted. Hope to turn them all out together on Monday. Fingers crossed they don't start fighting. He will be going with the ladies in 4 weeks time.

I've been out hacking this morning on one of my neighbours horses. There all 16hh which was my worry. Havent ridden on that big in probably 15 years. 3 of us went out. First time riding in almost 5 weeks for me. Just hoping I haven't lost too much of that muscle I was starting to build up from riding the mare or I might be a little achy tomorrow. Was quite nervous to start with but I actually picked the one they descibed as a plod. Did need some leg on in the beginning but once he woke up it was all fine. We even managed a long 400m trot along the field margin. It was actually mega relaxing. I found his pace straight away. So different to the mare who felt so unbalanced. This was so smooth. I didnt manage to get him into canter but that was fine. Next time. I was in the front and the girls actually said they were having a steady canter behind me whilst i was trotting.
Its 3 years since I cantered so I'm apprehensive about doing it and on a 16hh you cover the ground so much faster. I never canter the mare at all during the months i rode her. Ground was so rock solid and i didnt trust her not to spook. The horse I rode today never spooked once. He did have a couple of trips but I was fine with that. We actually did the hack I use to do with the boys. A couple of bits the girls have never hacked on either which surprised me, so then have now got a couple of new loops that they can do.
I really enjoyed the ride. Hopefully we can go out again.

Very busy day today. All ewes foot trimmed. Lambs have been separated and gone to neighbours rested paddock. Lambs were advertised for sale 3 weeks ago but only one enquiry so far. So disappointed i havent sold them with clock change tonight. It extra work.

Mr Cadmus is harnessed and in with his ladies. I've had to leave one ewe in the shed. I managed to catch and trim her feet in the field last weekend as she was lame. Nothing obvious, I thought maybe she had got an abcess that had already burst so just cut that away. But during this week lameness has got really bad to the point shes non weight bearing now. She is not an amenable ewe to catch in the field, even crippled, i tried. So she had to wait till today for me to have another look when we ran everyone across the fields and into the shed. Foot is hot and swollen. But nothing obvious. Im suspecting an abcess to ripen somewhere at some point. Retrimmed the tiniest bit of growth. Weve soaked foot in zinc solution and she's had a LA antibiotic. Will resoak her foot for the next few days. Another jab Monday. See what happens with daily treatment.

Quin has worked well. Saved my legs. Hes now out for the count resting whilst I have lunch at 4pm.

Very satisfying, my lame ewe has blown an abcess out of the top of the hoof wall this evening. Hopefully she will be able to weight bare on it a bit by tomorrow. Gave her another antibiotic jab tonight. Hopefully she can go back out in the field on Wednesday.
The ram lambs went to the abbatoir this morning. With them gone she can float around the yard and shed. There's some grass in the yard she can pick on. She didn't want to stand for long tonight.

First hay put out this morning for the cows and some in tomorrow's paddock. Won't be a regular thing for a few weeks yet. It is only because today's and tomorrows paddocks are a little smaller so not as much grass on them so I thought a few bales of hay will help eek out the grass. They were tucking into it.
Ewe has blown a 2nd abcess in her foot. First one is still bloody. Not healing. Still not weight bearing so she's staying in still. My other lame ewe is out in the field. Still can't see what's wrong with her. She's catchable and getting around so she can stay out.
Cadmus has done 4 ewes so far. Noted I had a polka dot ram. Then looked at raddle crayon under his chest. Crows have been pecking at it, then jumping up on his back. Hope they don't eat it too quick. It's supposed to last 3 weeks before I change for a new colour. Clearly crows are draw to colour and like the taste of wax crayon.

Golly that's weird with the crows liking the crayon isn't it! I had a pet one once, but he really only liked stealing sausages off the barbeque and bread and other bits and bobs we fed him. He used to try and eat my toes in sandals too - strange bird!

They crows did it a couple of years ago on the rams. Last year it was fine maybe because Frank was such a fiesty ram. Cadmus is quite gentle natured. Although give him a few months I'm not going to trust him. He's had a couple of glances in my direction this week. I think those horns will make contact with my legs before too long.
It's amazing how quick the crows discovered the crayon, considering I only put the harness on Cadmus and put him in last Saturday.
