So I have a good history of horses brought on an ex racer from the track to elementary from a four year old and chanter as a rescue but never had a true youngster.

He is unhandled when I got him he is just over 2 1/2 he will lead in and around the farm let me pick up feet etc and I am happy with what and how we are going but I need to read more I am going on instinct and previous knowledge but I need more. I not willing to cut corners or make mistakes not I want more knowledge.

Please recommend me any books

Useful tools to have are gut instinct. Feel. They are a horse you are a human. Keep it simple, don't make it more complex than it needs to be.

But for reading I liked.

Train your young horse by Richard Maxwell.

New Sensations- introducing voice training, Tanya Larrington
(I love using the voice and she listens)

100 ways to a perfect partnership, Susan Mcbane. Ideal to flick through for a session if you get sick for something to do.

Bombproof your horse Rick pellicano

Schooling with groundpoles by Clare Lilley.

Groundwork Training, forget who by.

A book on lunging and longreining because we enjoy it. It doesn't need to stop just because they work under saddle. I like seeing how she moves over poles and it keeps you fit jogging beside and behind.

I am a bookworm.

I really like the Richard Maxwell book already recommended. Another good one by him is Unlock Your Horse's Talent in 20 Minutes A Day, which has a bit more on lunge and long lining than "Train Your Young Horse". TYYH has more about baby horses, though.https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Unlock-Y...way&sprefix=unlock+your+horses,aps,132&sr=8-1

There are a couple of great German books (in English translation, I hasten to add) on in hand work up to High School level which you might like later in his career as you introduce lateral movements, but they're frankly a bit dry and I don't think you need them at this stage!

I'd check out Perry Woods, as really like him.

There's also a great positive reinforcement book which covers every day things like teaching to lead, tie up etc. I've forgotten the name of it - it's *something* like humane horsemanship - but it's ace :)
