I always buy good quality Jods from well known brands but at £30-£50 a pair I can usually only have a couple of pairs a year.

But for Christmas I got bought some cheaper brand Jodphurs for less that £14 a pair they fit well and are comfortable, seem just as well made as more expensive pairs.... I like them so much I have ordered another pair from Ebay....

I an effort to cut back on expenses ... I can have 3-4 pairs of these a year for similar price of one good pair....

So what do you lot think...... do you wear cheaper Jods and save expense or wear the dearer branded makes? I do have nice quality well known makes for my show gear.... so I am on about for everyday riding???

I've got both - I tend to like middle price like Sherwood best. Mountain Horse are a bit dearer but they do last a long time. Think I prefer having a few cheaper pairs to just one or two dear ones.

My favourite and most long lasting pair are actually from tesco years ago...they cost about £15 at the time. They seem thicker than others I've had so love them in the winter. Last time I looked, theydidn't sell them anymore though :-(

I'd be interested to know the make or eBay seller of your new ones Native Lover.

The new ones I got were Goldstar for 13.99 with free postage of Ebay the ones I got were navy blue with pink saddle seat but for everyday they are nice thick material... :D I will see if they last me as long ... But I was pleased with the quality and the fit ( I am plus size 18 so even harder to fit than most riders)

I ride in HKM or Equetch denim ones. They were worth the money but I suppose it depends on what you want - I like my jods to look like jeans because I wear them on the school run and out and about too, and also I find a lot of the cheaper ones give you VPL!

Thanks, I'll take a look!

It depends how many hours a week you ride. When OH and I started we both had cheap breeches/jods. However we both bought expensive warm cord breeches for winter riding, and I have had mine since 2003 - I have worn them twice a week for 3 months of every year since then. I wore them to hack this morning and they are as good as new.

In 2008 the posh shop at a dressage centre tempted me and I bought a pair of pikeur Jessica denim breeches. I have worn them twice a week for most of the rest of the year ever since. 6 years now. Gave away all my others as I never wore them.
I was so impressed that when OH's cheap breeches rubbed him, I bought him a pair of Pikeur too. He rides once a week so has time to wash them and doesnt need a spare. I did need a spare and last Christmas I bought myself a pair of the most popular Pikeur but I havent worn them much.

So I own a total of three pricey pairs - all German - bought in 2003, 2008 and 2012. For years our RI swore by Pikeur - wore them day in and day out - and told me it would not be worth our buying any due to cost. But if you divide up the price, that was a false economy. I just cant imagine buying 2 or 3 pairs a year because I dont need to.

Plus I have a big bum and huge waist measurement for my height. We once stopped off at Rideaway when driving north and I tried on half a dozen pairs, some quite pricey like Ariat and Mountain Horse and none fitted me.

As a matter of interest I also wore to hack this morning Ariat boots (expensive) and Tuffa suede half chaps (not expensive) also 11 years old.

The whole question of clothing costs, labour conditions and the short life expectancy of cheap clothes was discussed on BBC women's hour this morning as I drove to the yard. They were talking about paying a bit more and expecting a life of 10 years for your clothes.

Aldi jods for me too.... although I did recently buy a pair of MT Gisburn breeches from a friend who said she'd only worn them a couple of times and then admitted that she couldn't actually remember wearing them... and they didn't look worn when they arrived. Bargain at £20 and they fit lovely too.

I tend to buy riding trousers with bootcut bottoms now, sadly they are more expensive than ordinary Johds, but they are great quality.

I use running trousers now, they work out about £10 a pair but I find them much more comfortable than jods. I do have a couple of nice pairs of beige jods that I keep in case I want to do any shows, but for normal day to day and riding I use my running trousers and walking trousers.

Thing is though Skib it also depends on how much of a tramp you are, I'm terrible for wiping my dirty hands on my jods and with a mud monster to deal with daily they get pretty filthy, I would be too terrified to ruin a posh pair of jods doing yard jobs in them!

You see I wear mine all day most days up to my neck in mud at this time of year picking out horses feet after they have come out of muddy fields., two big German shepherd jumping up and me.. wiping muddy hands on me... so I need something hardwearing and not to expensive.

If they last I will stock up on them in different colours :)

And I will look out for the Aldi ones

I need lots of pairs as apart from my Gok Wan skinnies I rarely wear anything else. At the last count I had 23 pairs but I have down sized my collection - due to losing some weight.

I don't like jods as I am in between sizes, 26 too small and 28 too big. I wear Jeggings from Sainsburys for everything, riding, cycling, mucking out, everything haha
