On an island
Poor big ginger boy. Called him in for his tea about an hour ago and he was very lame coming up the field. Got him in and his tendon / lower leg feels warm. So ice booted him. His leg was a bit shaky too. Not long since he's had an abscess - but I don't think this is another one of those (I really wish it was rather than a pulled tendon). The odd thing is, that when he came up for breakfast this morning he was okay and I didn't notice anything but I did catch him laid down twice which is not like him when normally he would be raring to go back out on a nice day.
So I am actually wondering now if its not something he did this afternoon but something he did last night. And me not noticing and letting him back out has made it worse🥹I've given him a bute in his tea and will ring the vet in the morning if he's worse or no better at all. He'll have to stay in tonight which won't be so good for Fuzzy but she can hang outside his door and come and go and please herself. Poor boy. He's so big and sweet natured, I just hate it when he's in pain. Pls send any healing for him.

Lots of get well vibes on the way xxx

Maybe he'd tweaked it a little bit earlier and then done more to it during the day, or maybe he'd only just done it and so it hadn't had time to show up yet if it wan't major damage. I also wouldn't rule out the abscess faring back up, sometimes they can backtrack up the leg.

You're doing everything right 🤗

Poor boy. If he's laying down he must be feeling uncomfortable. Was he laying in the field. Maybe walking on uneven surface was causing more pain. Box and yard rest is possibly best.

Thank you - I am kind of leaning towards it being either a grumbling abscess this morning - or indeed as you say maybe backing up his leg because there isn't any swelling and really not much heat. He was in overnight and both fronts felt a tiny bit warmth, but it is very warm here and he's bedded on straw.

No, he was laying down in his box. He nearly always has a mid morning lay down and sleep, but what was unusual yesterday was he did that as normal and then when I came back from my ride he was laid down again which was odd as normally he is ready for back out to his field.

Thank you all for the vibes. This morning he was in good spirits and asking nicely (he makes a nice chunnering noise) for his breakfast. I gave him a danilon first thing and before it had kicked in I let him have a tiny wander on the yard. He looked a bit stiff which is expected as he does have arthritis and normally free ranges overnight. He also didn't appear quite as lame - and he did put his front hoof up on a big stone in order to reach over into my front garden to attack the flowers! So if it is the front leg then it's not that sore, because he was standing at an odd angle.
Walked him up after the danilon and he's definitely not right but not any worse (phew). So I'm leaning towards keeping up the ice boot on and off which surely can't do any harm even if it's not a pulled tendon, and let him wander the yard but not the field.
I'm booking the farrier hopefully for later this week or early next week, so if there's an abscess she might be able to help on that score.

Could it be a bruise from the abscess point?
Had your ground suddenly dried up?
I am wondering about a bruise as well. Yes, the ground is rock hard, we have had the odd shower but not proper rain lately.
I had a good look at the place where the original abscess was - it looked okay apart from a tiny stone in there which I removed. He seems to prefer walking on the rubber mats at the moment too. I offered him a yard wander but he's not bothered and just stuck to the rubber which tells me its soreness of some kind rather than his leg. Mr T reckons that the leg was not swollen -we iced it as a precaution really. He's happy enough in himself and I'm going to pop his massage rug on now, they say they are good for box resting horses so that might be nice for him.

Everything crossed that's the case and that hopeflly the farrier will be able to help. Do you think it would do any good to warm poiltice the hoof again?

Just an update;
Farrier been this morning, she didn't find any abscess but she agreed with us in that after feeling legs, there was most definitely no heat and no swelling. However she reckons she could feel a tiny bit of bony growth near the hoof - which is probably down to his arthritis. I guess it could just be catching up with him. I knew he had it when we took him 9 years ago. So when vet comes to check teeth in a couple of weeks I'll have another chat about it. It might be time to give a little more Danilon, or indeed just as and when he's needing it. He's definitely moving better today - but we all agreed he'd be better out during the day and not stuck indoors getting stiff. He was a joy to watch going out - as he had a mahoosive roll and is now grazing quietly looking very settled. Phew. So I'm leaning towards the arthritic changes - and possibly he'd either stood on something and bruised a foot? Who knows. But no abscess that we can detect and definitely no leg swelling either.
I'm gas lighting myself now, because at first I thought I could feel a bit of warmth - that was day before yesterday. But that's gone. Anyway long waffle but thank you all very much for the good vibes. 🐴 😍
