I always promised Lily i would get her a companion and with the loss of Fleur and summer approaching seemed a good time to do it. I was going to have a rescue donkey from a sanctuary but waited 2 months for them to home check plus she needed sedation with the farrier - I would have been happy to go down to the sanctuary and work with her and see if i thought I would be able to get her farrier ready as it increases the cost by £100 to be a vet out.

In the end I bought one of the donkeys from the dodgy dealer that Lily came from - they are selling off the ones they marketed as 'xmas presents' but couldn't sell as they got strangles having bought a horse from a local to us even more dodgy dealer.

Zak is same age as Lily and sold as ridden....well good luck with that. Had an 'interesting' first day. Put him in a small quarantine paddock where he could see Buddy who is still on sick leave, so the little shit goes under the electric fence into a wooded area. Took me 40 minutes to get him out of there and then reinforcing the fence so he couldn't go back in there. And a further 20 minutes to catch him. Not knowing if it was going to be torrential I thought maybe the best thing was to stable him overnight and leave Lily on the yard where he could see her but not touch. Rigged up fencing for that. He was upset in the stable - donkey size doors top door closed - so I opened the top door to see if he would settle better. So he jumped/climbed out fell on his back, got cast and had to pull him out by his hind legs to get him out. Then close the got quickly to the main field.

In the end I put him in the small paddock next to the stable and left Lily on the yard so he could see her and nuzzle. Sod quarantine as more concerned he would try jumping the fence. Lily is not helping by being energetically in season......

This morning managed to touch him and make a fuss of him, he has wounds/rubs on his head from a halter - he was in a stable haltered and they brought him out and loaded him, I told them not to tie him up as Lily travelled better loose - they didn't take the halter off. I suspect they knew that he was difficult to catch which is why he has all the rubs and scars on his face. He is still in the small paddock and have put Lily in the bigger one next to him so they can communicate, once she stops being a brazen hussy will put her in with him, as i suspect he may run under the electric fence in the summer fields.....and if he is loose in there god knows when we will see him again....

He has been advertised extensively as ridden, images of ridden by an adult, and also good on a lead rein. He doesn't know how to lead and I certainly wouldn't put a child on him as he takes off. While it is inconvenient that he is completely not as described to me - he is worse than Lily and she now leads very well and is very confident - I am shocked that they are peddling donkeys like this as suitable for children. Thank god he wasn't a xmas present. He'll be ok in the end before i came up from the yard i stood at the gate and called him and he came over to about 2ft from me, will practice catching him. He doesn't know treats and is pretty skinny, his breast bone has no cover and you can feel every rib very clearly - probably has lice will see if i can powder him. Lily was in much better physical condition than he is.20260403_134452.jpg20260403_134405.jpg20260403_134409.jpg

Thank you for the thread and the pictures. I know nothng about donkeys, but one needs a donkey to breed a mule, so I have a selfish interest. My canyon riding days are long gone but the mules I rode are unforgettble..

Goodness what a carry on for you ! I am glad he's found you - his life will be taking a turn for the better from now on. I still can't believe that folk actually buy them for Christmas - and more to the point that dealers stock them like they are disposable. That aside, sounds like you've got your work cut out. As said already, so glad he's found you though. I should imagine a less patient home would be a disaster. Specially if kids involved. I hope Lily isn't permanently in season as well - just a thought as Fuzzy is an older girl and from around now onwards she seems to be permanently in season. Now whether that's just Zi being a hunk lol I don't know! Anyway I hope she calms down and they make friends. I too wouldn't be bothered by the quarantine at this point, it sounds like he would be better all round if he can make friends with her now. Going places that he shouldn't isn't always safe and its a hassle for you trying to catch. Poor little man too having rubs where the halter was. Lots of settling in vibes for him.

he'll be fine OH has gone to get carrots polo and ginger nuts so I can have a reward for him as he doesn't know what the equerry mint treats are and that they are yummy. Harmony would sell her soul for them.

He survived the very stormy night with Scooby's rug intact and managed to catch him in 15 minutes which is an improvement, let me lift his feet which was a surprise. Lily went out with the others and he coped ok, let him come onto the yard with the gate open to the field. He let me come and give him a hug and feed him ginger nuts. Got a good look at the wounds on his head from a too tight headcollar left on - to my surprise he let me put some manuka honey on them there is one underneath that is a deep ridge. He is doing much better still very flight and scared but if you can get a hand on him, he relaxes.

Ended today on a good note. Lily and Zak side by side in separate paddocks, eating some haylage, very calm. Offered Lily the mint treats which he refused to eat and offered to him, and he ate it so he is copying her. Have managed to walk up to him without him running away and give him a scratch and hug. So getting there. He is much more relaxed, last night once I got the rug on him he did a lot of running around but he has been just mooching around today in the paddock and on the yard.

They are together today i tried to bring him into have breakfast in a stable but won't go in really scared so leave that alone for now fed him in the paddock and put Lily in with him and they ate side by side but she clearly is going to be the boss. Sure he will be much better with her even though she is still a work in progress. She at least leads and goes into stables happily.

Sounds like its going well - its early days isn't it, I'm sure after a short while with yourself he'll be fine.

He is up the big field with everyone had to go and reinforce the fence as he is a bit of an escape artist, last seen standing in a circle with Buddy, Suze, Harmony and Scooby, Lily is too busy trimming the hedge. It's amazing how easily horses accept a donkey compared to introducing a new horses, not a squeal chase or ears back

That's really interesting about them allowing him into the herd. I always dislike the first few days when a new member joins as its upsetting sometimes to see them alone and shoved in a corner.
Lol, having said that Fuzzy wasn't standing in the Billy-no-mates corner for anyone, she quickly asserted her authority!

Buddy ignored him Suze and Harmony fine and he had met scooby. They were standing in a circle all dozing apart from Lily who was trimming the hedge. He came back onto the yard on his own and went through the fence on the bank to get to the nice grass despite the fact i had reinforced it in the morning. Caught him and left him overnight in the little paddock solo as he can't get out of there - or at least not so far.....

Improving all the time. He went into the stable he jumped out of last Friday and ate his breakfast, had his rug taken off and his feet done for the first time. He hangs around with them all even attempted to assist Harmony with her breakfast. Lily loves him they are like a mum and foal the difference in height

Doing well apart from doing a limbo under a fence yesterday afternoon and had to be retrieved. The dealer is selling the other donkey via Newcastle Auction with a note that willing to sell donkeys and project horses without viewings. Well that's how I bought him and Lily. It's disgraceful what is happening to these donkeys god knows where they are ending up and they are so not as described. Vet coming out to vaccinate him - no vaccinations done according to passport but send them to a sale with no protection. He has a new rug now as Scooby's was a bit big on him but did the job.
