2022 Hacking and Riding

Cold, Cold, Cold.
I managed to ride in the school on Thursday. One side was frozen, but the other side had got some sun and was ok. After that though everything was solid, so Harvey got a holiday. At least the fields were clear of frost by lunchtime so he could get some field time. All of out hacking has hills and is under the cover of trees so its not worth the risk

Please can I go out?

We got a message to put our ice into a bucket and not on the grass to save the water. 😁

Very tame but it is the same in London. Unusual for everything to freeze here, including the school. I cancelled my riding and am not sorry to learn that all riding is cancelled today even for the sporty young things who seem cross about that. I dont want to seem a whimp and the breeches recomended by @carthorse are warm as toast. But I think I am becoming a fair weather rider. I gather from another forum that some people dont ride at all in winter.

I managed to get her out today.
The lane I needed to use to get off road, I pre walked before I went and got her.

It is still icy in places off road even adjacent to the sea. Little bits of the beach were frozen.

I cleared the ice from the livestock trough and fresh water run in.
The water she walked through last week we had to avoid.
Please don't put your hoof on that, or your nose.

I wondered if there would be frozen bits on the beach. I haven't been and looked. But bet there are if you have them.

I seem to recall learning at school that the reason life can exist is because water expands when solid (unlike other liquids) and therefore the solid water (ice) due floats on top of the liquid water so everything under the ice is protected and existence can carry on. Every time I look at our garden pond I hope this is true!

Got her out today in the sunshine. Exactly the same route as we know what's what and where.
Dug out my treeless pad to try under the hybrid, ignore how it's sitting it's just being taken for a walk at the moment 🤣😂

We had some butterflies when I asked her to go off and lunge just in walk on the beach.
From me because she could decide to go woo-hoo and I may face plant, and end up with shells stuck up my nose. 😁
And from her because it's the first time I ever asked her to do this here, she was a little distracted by the joggers and a car going by.
I just did three loops and carried on.

I can't remember when I last rode, probably a few weeks ago, no matter to her anyway.
We set off in the sunshine and I was a tad too warm at times.
Warning about to name drop, but my Ariat joggers that I got secondhand are lush. They are so comfy to wear, ride in, really warm, AND I can get them into my long boots. 😁👍

She's deciding if she wants a drink while I clean my boots and unblock the drain at the same time.

I am glad you had a glorious hack too @newforest.
A perfect sunny winter day so I got out my winter hacking clothes, and we had a perfect circuit of the track and a long perfect canter too. I felt to be on a happy, relaxed, forward-going horse, but not too energetic. I just sat on her and she went.

When I mentioned this on my return, I was told that, though she was out on a hack this morning (before I rode her) apart from that. she had not been hacked for the last week, because of the snow. It was lovely to be out. I have had a bad cold and cough but am now better and feel so lucky still to have my health and to be out and about on a horse.

I haven't been out for weeks. Tuesday was picture perfect for a hack but the sporadic infection I get on my leg popped up right under the seam of my jodhs/tights and I didn't dare. We went for a walk instead but it's not the same. I was so cross! Working again now till Saturday but I'm hoping for an outing over Christmas.
