I am looking to buy a 12 year old 17hh, thoroughbred and was wondering if people who own similar sized horses could help me with some simple guide lines as to how much hay they feed, how much and what types of hard feed they feed, how often and for how long they turn out for, and how large their stables are, any pricings, and any other points or info that you think would be useful to know would be of great help as well, many thanks Charlotte

Hmm I own a 17hh tb. My boy has been in a 12x12 box know problems though is now in a 14 by 18 :D feeding wise.. well that's down to the horse. Mine has adlub but when I weighed it on a cold winter night he could eat up to 14kg of hay per night but that wasn't often! Feeding... well my boy struggles with weight so he needed 3 meals a day and a lot of Cals so that wasn't cheap!!! He was on a range of feed. Cubes/dengie/baileys etc finally due to his issues we are.on fibre feeds. Erm he I'd out full time in the summer in the winter he goes out everyday any were between 8 and 12 hours lol.
Any tips. Don't fall off! 17hh is a Long way to fall! And when the ground it's hard and it's cold it does get your feet jumping off a 17hh! Though he makes jumps look tiny and traffic are normally weary..:D

Harvey is 17hh but not a TB. There is nothing on his passport but I would guess he is mostly ID.

He has a 7' rug. His stable is about 11' x 14' which he seems happy in (he can lie down across the short side). He is fed twice a day on a scoop of chaff and a scoop of pony nuts, and he gets about 20lb of hay. At the moment is is out about 6pm to 9am, mostly he is out 8am - 6pm or dawn to dusk if shorter
