And we’re there...

Monkey did 3+ hours yesterday and had to be the grown-up for virtually the whole ride and he did really really well. We did the bridge, level crossing, tunnel under the railway, river wading and almost 10 miles!

The video L put together is fab, taken with her 360 that I was wielding most of the time.

I decided I probably wasn’t going to ride today after all that, so I’ve been pottering around all day doing jobs. After morning hay they snoozed most of the day in the shelter, then wandered out to the field around 2.30. I called them back for their feed at about 3.30 and Monkey had a nose bleed.

I wiped out his nostril and there were a couple of clots but it had mostly stopped bleeding, I couldn’t see any injury.

It’s so dry here, they kick up clouds of dust just walking around, so I’m thinking that’s probably caused it, or enthusiastic rubbing/rolling because of the flies, which are also awful. But I’ll nip back in a bit and check it hasn’t restarted, just in case.
Aw, hope he's okay, it sounds like it's probably the dust / rolling etc combo? Fuzzy had one not long ago but nothing since.

I went back and it was bleeding again quite a bit, enough he smeared it up both front legs and sneezed it all over me!

I called the vet for advise and she suggested sticking a cotton wool ‘tampon’ up his nose, which he let me do, but snorted it out 4 times so I gave up as figured that could make matters worse. The vet said it could take 24 hours to stop completely, but if doesn’t, or if it happens again, we’ll scope. It seemed to have stopped again before I left, I looked up his nose with a torch and couldn’t see anything obvious that would have caused it.

Monkey thought it was pretty nice to get a late visit and extra treats 😆

Aw poor boy, but yes extra treats and a late visit would be welcomed. Hope it’s okay now.

First ride since his nosebleeds, I kept it light with just under an hour mostly at walk with 1 trot and he seems completely un bothered 👌

Kids built a den in the forest and Monkey insisted on heading off the trail to go and check it out, he’s so nosey!

He’s also taken to peering over the back wall of people’s gardens as we come back along the drove since they cut the ivy off the top!

Aw love it when they are curious. I'd loved to have seen him coming past my garden having a good nosey when we lived south lol

L&L came over yesterday, I couldn’t be out too long as I’m dog sitting for a friend so we just did about 90 minutes.

Monkey was hilariously tired, twice I tried to trot and he managed 2 steps before slumping back to walk 🤣 I did eventually get him woken up enough to get going and we had a nice trot and canter up the hill.

We came back through a village, which Monkey thought was great because he could nose in people’s gardens. L is learning from him, she’s started checking out he one he looks into 🤣

I haven’t taken Monkey out in the trailer since our weekend away just over 2 months ago, but today we ventured out to see an old friend.

He was mildly hesitant to load but on in under 3 minutes and traveled like a lamb. But we had a bit of something happen on route, there was an almighty bang and the trailer did a huge leap sideways at 50mph 😳😱 I had just started slowing on a long downhill, I’m not sure if the trailer breaks caught momentarily or Monkey did something but we were only 5 minutes from our destination so i cautiously continued. He off loaded cool as a cucumber 👌

We had a nice couple of hours exploring, and he was foot perfect with this horse he’s not met before and past horses in a field he’s never seen before, and with a huge tractor at full speed with a big rattly trailer, all in all I was really chuffed with him today, he coped with a lot that would have blown his brain before 🤩
IMG_2246.jpeg
He loaded back up, again slight hesitation but nothing terrible and travelled brilliantly. We got stuck at a level crossing for over 15 minutes and he didn’t fuss, so I’m super happy with that.

This is one of the reasons getting my trailer out (or back in) is a bit of a pain, they just couldn’t give two hoots!

Monkey is such a drama queen sometimes, but other days he’s a dude. Tonight I was merrily trimming trees as we passed (I just snap of the small low branches so the paths don’t get overgrown) and a 6ft branch came with my twig and smacked him on the bum and he totally ignored it 🤩

The other day we were scrambling down a bank and he kicked an empty plastic bottle which ricocheted between his feet with each step all the way down, he ignored that too 🤩

Trying to convince him not to snack on bracken almost as tall as him was a challenge tonight 🤣

Then there was a tiny tree that had come down across the path, and it required a bum tuck squealy jump 🤣

Monkey went out a fuss-pot this morning, he couldn’t walk out, looking everywhere for monsters, couldn’t possibly manage a straight line, all because he needed a wee! I just wish didn’t spend half the ride trying to find the right spot to do it. He was a lovely ride after he got that out of the way!

We had a nice ride this morning, L&L came over. Monkey was much more chilled than yesterday and we just plodded around for almost 2 hours.

He had his goofy head on, every person we passed he insisted on stopping to talk and then didn’t want to leave because getting fusses from random strangers is his favourite pass time!

Got to the yard tonight and Monkey came flying around the corner in full big Welsh dragon trot, I debated how wise it was to actually ride! But he was actually a champ, we got out for an hours fun buzzy ride 😁

We had a nice uneventful ride today, but the mushroom foragers were out so we didn’t get as much fast work in as I’d hoped (they creep slowly through the trees and make most horses wary!)

Monkey and I headed out after work tonight
IMG_2340.jpeg
he was in a super chilled mood, we made the most of the freshly mowed track edges and trotted and cantered lots, popped a few logs (he’s really got it down now) and generally had a jolly old time 🤩 and got back just as the sun was setting

Just a caution if he snacks on Bracken regularly. It is toxic to horses. Causes neurological issues over time like incoordination, depression, muscle tremors, unsteady gait if the eat it (dried - in hay or fresh) on a regular basis.
