I was so happy Jess got through her first year out of work lovely and slim and even a few ribs visible at the end of summer. But the effects of the haylage (for her breathing) are now evident, she’s chunked up significantly, she’s fat, even got a gutter down her back which I haven’t seen on her in years and she’s got a little bit of a crest!

I knew it was happening, I switched her onto mostly soaked hay a couple of weeks ago, but I hadn’t really stopped and looked since then so it was a bit of a shock.

Oh heck, I just looked back at the info I sent @Ale in October; 498kg on weight tape

And the tape is always 60kg under on her!

it’s the width of her back that’s really increased!

This might not be the reply you want but this will be something to talk about in my dissertation at least ?

I thought if your dissertation too @Ale as the trial saddle has gone back now and I'm dreading seeing the result of not having a saddle until February ?

There's only so much difference core work, bareback rising and walking out will make ...

I have to say @Jessey I can't really see where she has put it
The pictures really don’t show it, it’s mostly across her back and a little everywhere else. She’s gone from feeling like skin and muscle over bone to something akin to a solid rubber ball ? in the flesh she’s noticeably bigger all over.

So even if I find nothing out from my study, which I don't think I will as I think I would need to do a fully controlled comparison to gain any scientific data, I may talk about the benefits of comparing weight using photographs and weight tape. You already do but alot of the owners I'm using didn't.

That and hands on BCS is really essential.

The yard I’m on now no one weight tapes or BCS, I think because I’m constantly aware of the Lami risk to Belle it’s second nature for me to do both regularly, same as checking her for raised pulses and heat in her feet, I think some people think I’m a little bit obsessed 🙄

I know a lot of people like that, who ignore it until they have a scare themselves.
