Ok this is a silly idea, but could actually be beneficial to us. Riding on the roads.
I was thinking of national riders safety day or campaign.

Anyway-since cars used to have someone walking in front with a flag to let other users know of their presence, why not have this for us as vulnerable road users (someone who could run if we trotted). :biggrin:

Remember when cars first hit the road... didn't work then either lol! :giggle: My second vote would have been, are you on the white or red? :biggrin:
 
Who would go in front of the man with the flag to warn road users that there was a vulnerable person waving a flag on the road?

I think it should be a huge, extremely flappy flag, possibly an umbrella or two and if we could get a noisy child on a scooter and a baby in a buggy, I think that will pretty much take care of our desensitising issues ...
 
haha, i basically only hack and have to go on the roads each time to reach the bridleways. mostly by myself - where on earth would I find someone to walk me up the hill with a flag each time? also think a slowcoach parade with a flag would make us riders (even) more unpopular with motorists to be honest and an aggrievd motorist is a lot more dangerous than one who thinks 'ah see they say thanks and move out of my way at the first chance they get so I can safely pass'.
 
Could imagine any initial enthusiam by a walker could soon turn to avoidance - my daughter tested the "Polite Waistcoat do they work theory the other night" dark and no lights down our lane she had just come back from turning him out, we suffer with speeding Motorbikes as well as the usual boy racers down the lane, she heard the bike coming down the lane from the other village and as he passed the 30 mile a hour sign she stepped out from behind a parked van (far enough away to be safe I would add) - yes they work - his head light obviously hit the waistcoat Hi viz and my daughter said she didn't realise a motorbike could stop that quickly- it crawled by her to the road junction and she heard it speed up again once out of sight! She wears it during the day as well as at night and far more effective than the old yellow/pink ones in her opinion.
 
I don't think it'd work! Plus most of the idiots approach from behind so I think what you'd need would be a giant flashing sign on a cart behind the last horse. (sort of like those big flashing arrows on the back of the motorway maintenance lorries)

Has anyone else found that drivers are different on different roads? The one directly off the yard the cars all slow down, go out over the cross roads and its almost as if they expect you to be doing 30mph.
I must say it is the one way system with parked cars so he i don't have a gap i can't get off the road to let them go. I did this on Sunday assuming it would be quiete:cold:r!
 
I remember a train journey back to London a few years ago when we slowed right down for about 20 minutes, all sat there wondering if it would be quicker to get out and walk, and yes in fact it would have been as the announcement came over "we apologise for the delay in this evenings service, unfortunately due to over running engineering works our guard is currently walking ahead of your train with a flag.." I presume they let him back in when we sped up again.. :giggle:

I don't find that they change on the road type but it definitely depends on the time of day - riding in rush hour seems to wind drivers up, I guess because they want to get home.. Vicar nearly took us out the other Sunday morning - they must have late for church! :ninja:
 
I've always been more bothered by traffic coming up behind, so love the idea of the flashing lights on a cart. Wouldn't work though. I had flashing lights and a sign on the back of my cart, and not only did some people still pass much too fast and close, but others came alongside, wound down their windows to talk to me and/or take photos of the "dear little pony". Many were oblivious of traffic coming the other way, so screeched forward when they realised they were running out of space!
 
What about us carrying the flag, :tongue: I did this in fancy dress and it was a very large flag that went over my head when the wind changed. Perhaps not the best health and safety idea.

I have found a flashing tail guard, so the cob with have a lights on her bum.

Personally I think every single person who learns to drive should have a compulsory lesson in passing animals and then, once they've passed the test, every single one should be sat on a young, preferably spooky horse while their instructor tears past them in a car with a sawn off exhaust pipe and dance music blaring.

THAT might help them think it through. Grrrrr :banghead:
