I was at Blair this weekend with a couple of mates, both brought their dogs along. We had just bought our tea, I was standing watching the show jumping and they were sitting on the ground with their dogs. I looked down to see them both allowing their dogs to eat what they were eating, at the same time, from the same plate/ fork. I had to look away as it made me feel a bit grossed out.
What gets me worse is that they were both happy to let their dogs lick them on the lips. I HATE this with a passion and had to turn around anytime they did it over the two days. It reminds me of that awful bit in the film 'There's something about Mary', where the overly tanned older lady is constantly licked by her dog. Yeeeuuckk. I know some girl dogs won't do it, but boy dogs constantly lick their bits. I don't then want them licking me on the face.

I then came home and have been thinking about it a bit more and realised.... I'm a hypocrite. I quite happily ask Flipo to give me a kiss with his muzzle. My only reasoning is that he can't lick his own willy. Is it so different?

How so you know he can't? It's just that you've never seen him do it

Seriously though, completely agree, really makes me cringe when people let their dogs lick their faces.

I have terrier who acts like a child (visitors will testify!) sits up on laps like a toddler but we have a strict no kissing/licking rule. Aided by seeing her 'clean' a cat litter tray!!

Horses are not carnivores and therefore not so gross but we still only do snuggly muzzles occasionaly

Yuck!
I hate it!! Especially as I know what kind of things my dog eats!!!
Wouldn't want his tounge anywhere near my face!
And they're all wet and slobbery!

At least with horses the muzzles are nice and soft and dry and velvety!

I think Geldings can reach, but it's pretty obvious they would never be good at keeping it clean, as it gets so cheesy!:playfull:

Eww, I totally agree, FP. There is no way I could let Ruby lick any cooking implements. Our employers' dogs will pounce onto the dirty plates in the dishwasher if I'm loading it which I also find quite repulsive.... yes I know they are virtually sterilised when washed in there but it's not something I'd ever permit Ruby to do at home.

And ditto re the pony muzzles... a totally different entity entirely and not in the least bit comparable, I say! :D

FM this totally grosses me out too - I think it's vile & makes me want to barf. Anybody who lets their dog do that to their face and eat off their plate *heaves* has no sense of hygiene IMO! Same when people let their cats crawl across the kitchen worktop.... Urgh.

I don't like anybody slobbering on me; not OH or Roxy :yellowcarded: I just can't bare it! I like to have some shmuzzle snuggles with Roxy on the velvety part of her shmuzzle with some kisses but that's it. No tongues and definitely no slobber!

Agree with all the above, I love my doggies, but I have a very strict cross contamination policy. Dogs do not eat off human crockery, they eat from their own bowls or the floor if they are quick enough. They are not allowed to lick faces and are strongly doscouraged from licking hands as well.

A guest once let their dog lick a teaspoon of mine. It went in the bin. (spoon not guest, although it was a close thing)

And I am NOT a clean freak by any stretch.

Totally agree with the dog/tongues thing - really get p'd off with people letting dogs "pre-wash" stuff in the dishwasher - apart from the fact there are knives in there folks!

Can't argues with a velvety/whiskery equine nose in my face!

Cats...ok I can major in hypocrisy here...the funniest thing in the world to me is a cat trying to make itself invisible and steal something from my plate...but I won't have a dog near the table...sadly not cats in my life at the mo so hypocrisy held at bay...

Agree with this, there was an episode of come down with me on last week and a lady had numerous cats/dogs who all loitered around the kitchen & were having a good old lick of the meal she was preparing. :cold:

I also dont like any animals licking my face, and i would not allow a horse to get too close either. I dont mind snuggling close to muzzles but the minute the mouth opens , im away quicker than you can say "licketylick".

This!

Harv occasionally let's me kiss the soft part of his nose, but he slobbers enough taking treats out my hand, I don't want him 'kissing' me!

My dog constantly tries to lick your face, we have no idea why, nobody in our family has ever let him. But you literally have to hold him back! :giggle: There was one occasion when play fighting with him when he was a puppy that I got a full on snog from him after he wriggled through my defences! BOKE!!!

Someone asked me the other day (in all seriousness) if I had to pick up my horses poo like you do a dogs. I laughed and then had to think for a bit why we don't have to! I think the same theory applies here, dogs eat meat, horses just eat grass. That's my thoughts anyway...plus dogs sniff each others bums and the like!

Ewwwwww!!!! I HATE dogs/cats licking me.....it's gross mainly because the food they eat makes their breath VILE and they lick they bum holes and other places.......!! Its gross!!!!!!

I do kiss mick on his muzzle though....BUT I dont think he licks his bum or or bits....!!!!:biggrin:

Quite right - horse poo isn't dangerous to humans as they're herbivores. Their poo is just made up of fibre & vegetationy type stuff.

Dog poo is dangerous & smells vile (not that horse poo is particularly aromatic!) because they are meat eaters. How/why this makes it worse I don't know but it does.

I'm not sure but I think it might be a puppy/lower down in the pack thing. Puppies seem to lick at their mothers mouths for food (regurgitated - bleugh) in the wild and I've noticed that the GSD not-so-pup-any-more (18 months), when he's been given a telling off by his father or mother will suddenly go submissive and start licking at their muzzles/mouths. I may well be wrong.

Yuck, yuck, yuck!!! Have three dogs and none of them lick my face, 2 of them never lick anyway and the one who would if given the chance is the smelliest, grossest little terrorist who would eat any old sh**e he could find! Doesnt bare thinking about.

However, my horses are more than welcome to snuzzle all around my face so guess I am a hypocrite too!

My friends dog used to lick her Mum's feet while watching TV....

*runs off to be sick*

running too!!! eughhhhh god thats horrible!!! but then I hate anything to with feet!

I think I'm part hypocrite....I wouldn't let a dog lick my face but and I'm Sorry if this makes anyone feel sick but my wee girl cat Lela (had her since 4 wk old so i am def mummy) grooms my fringe when she is sleepy....pulls my hair through her teeth. Its cute but now i think about it pretty gross!

Just burst out laughing on my own here in the office at this thread!! lol.
Totally know what you mean though! I hate being licked by dogs - I guess it's cos they eat meat?!
Horses are clean - and it's totally different. I kiss ours regularly (gosh that sounds weird!!!)
