Just don't get this. My horse and pony were both wormed Feb, and they have only been back on the grazing for a month. However, I've just seen two what I think are red worms in the poo (can't tell which one of course). How can this be????? What should I do now????? Thank you.

First of all get a worm count done so you know what you're dealing with?

What did you worm with? If you wormed in February then with most drugs you're overdue if you follow a standard plan. There can be resistance problems with some drugs, the only way to tell is to do a count, worm & then do another count to see how much the burden has been reduced. Also did you weigh tape so that you'd got a reasonable idea of how much to give?

I'd definately start with a worm count though.

Thanks CH. Yes I weigh taped and I used Quest Pramox, but as I do worm count and only worm as needed I'd be surprised if they were resistant. Will worm count. Thanks.

It's unlikely that you'd have a resistance problem with that one anyway & you should still be ok since it's supposed to do 13 weeks. How strange! Did they have a high count before you wormed them?

The only thing I can think of is maybe some encysted ones have hatched out, I know Equest is meant to deal with encysted but there's always the chance it won't get them all.

Forgive me if this sounds totally daft - but are you sure the worms you have seen actually came out of the horse's system? Only I do know on our grazing , any reasonably freshish dung is rapidly inhabited by little wriggly red worms that are immature or some sort of earth worm - they come up out of the ground and work their way through all the delicous horse poo!:p

Sorry if this a stupid suggestion - but did once have a friend say 'Urggh!!! look at the worms the horses have got'!:) Scuttled over to see the good old earth worms doing their natures job.:) sons says they are brilliant bait for fishing though!

I had exactly this too with a new horse and used the Pramox. I ended up worming again with Vectin two weeks later and so far so good.
