Another piece that caught me this week. Clara Balding interviewed in the Times Saturday.

Why does she think girls tend to love horses so much? . . . . “Well, they’re big and they’re strong, yet you can persuade them to do what you want to do. . . . . And that idea of flying and freedom and being out on your own is attractive to a lot of women. I love that feeling. It’s a proper co-operative relationship.”

As a girl I was just captivated by them and I could not possibly have explained why. It was total and utter obsession. To the extent that I bought a door sized poster of a stable door with a horse looking over it into my bedroom. That horse was my best friend! I'm not sure boys seek out companionship and comfort in the same way? My daughters use their friends for comfort and support far more than my son who tends to be looking more for entertainment and fun with his friends.

They are just living magic to me and have a magnetic pull. I wonder why some women are drawn to them though and others not?
I was not sporty as a kid at all, quite the opposite, I was a bit of a clutz tbh. So it isn't just fit sporty types either. Hmmm.

I'm still not sure what the pull is. There's a kind of freedom in riding, just you and your horse in harmony - maybe for women it's a positive distraction and release from all the pressures we usually face in terms of pressures to look a certain way, the low level harrassment most of us get on a daily basis that's so common we barely even notice it, etc.

I hope the above link works...it is so beautiful and thoughtful, I hope if the time comes someone will be so thoughtful to do the same for me...warning have a tissue nearby you need to watch it to the end..women and horses, this shows it never leaves us once we have been touched by these beautiful creatures..

I've often wondered why I love horses so much. I am not sporty, not at all a good rider, but I love horses and riding with a passion. Lots of good explanations above. Although it isn't the main reason I agree with Squidsin is that one big plus is to be able to escape from the pressure we all feel to look a certain way and to instead enjoy being covered in straw and manure (or maybe that is just me :p)

Hahahaaa no I enjoy being covered in nature!lol OH thinks its so funny cos I have such bad OCD normally about germs / dirt etc. Except for when I am around horses!

That was truly beautiful thank you for sharing

Have never been able to explain this! Have tried many times to my non-horsey OH (who im slowly dragging into the horsey world:D) all i know is that at 3 years old my mum sat me on her friends palomino mare and that was it - I never wanted to get off from that day on! Even as an adult now im guilty of picking things like mugs and notebooks with pony patterns on rather than the sensible office appropriate versions....

Peace, hope and acceptance in a non too accepting world at times and their complete honesty in who we are as a person. They are a true mirror and they don't lie.

That feeling of total freedom and awe that such a magnificent animal allows us the pleasure of not only been in their life but also riding them and giving us wings x

Saw this on facebook and it made me think of this thread

For me its a feeling of 'home'... being around horses makes me feel true happiness and peace and where I really feel myself. As others has said... without pressure to look or be a certain way, with no need to be a mum, a wife, a daughter... I'm just me, and I hope to own horses and ride until the day I die! xxx
