I have decided to bite the bullet and start going to my riding school for lessons, I go there once a week already and ride one of their ponies, but now i have acess to some transport, I am going to make the most of it and start taking my own pony.

I've decided to do this mainly because i have finally found a RI that i 'gel' with, she is firm but not scarey strict and i feel with her, i have progressed more than any other instuctor, she has got me jumping 3ft when a cross used to scared the life out of me. Unfortunatley, she is not insured to leave the RS and teach, therefore thats why i am going there.

The reason i have started this thread, is because I'm a little worried about how he is going to be away from home. His previous owners apparently took him out a lot.... but i've been told a lot of bull from them and when I took him to his first show (which was at my RS) he was awful, napped the whole time and spooked at silly things. I am also a little worried because i'm not sure if he's been in an indoor school before!

So some questions!
How is your horse at your RS and how were they the very first time you took them? How long did it take for them to get used to it?
Are they nappy, do they spook more than usual? How are they to load?
Do you feel your lessons away from home benefit you as much as at home, as in..Can you get nice work out of them, and then be able to get it at home too?

Take him. Your instructor will look after you both. Tell her you are worried and why and let her take over.
My horse can be a bit explosive and I take her for lessons - she is fine and the more I do, the better she gets.
Go for it.

ruby & i started regular lessons a bout 3 months ago - we hack to a small riding school - the first couple of times she was a little spooky & anxious but i had low expectations of those lessons anyway - just wanted to get her used to a new environment - she has really taken to the lessons - ive done very little in the last year other than hacking - works well & seems to be enjoying learning new stuff & its given me some focus for work at home - she likes it so much there that if we pass their gates on a hack - she wil try to go & visit:)

I could take our pony to Littlys RS but I've chosen to keep her on RS ponies to give her the experience of riding other ponies and she has one of the instructors from the RS to our yard to teach her at home on her pony

I may still take him down but like you - I do worry a lot as to how he will behave

I haven't taken Bronson to a riding school for lessons - half the ones round here are awful, and the other half are more expensive than going freelance - but I've taken him to lessons with instructors at other yards, and never had a problem; he's always settled in straight away and done nice work.
If your pony does get nappy, then the experience with your instructor being there to help you should do him good. Good preperation for if you want to take him out competing or anything :)

Go for it and have fun. You'll be a great position if he gets spooky or nappy as you'll have your instructor there to help, and it only improve things. He may take time to settle initially depending on his character.

I take my horse to lessons/ riding club clinics once or twice a week. Usually different locations for the RC sessions.

She's nappy by nature so is no different out and about than at home. I benefit immensley because I keep my horses and home so its great for socialising and getting out and doing things. I definitely work better away from home too as I am less distracted.
