Hello everyone,

I’ve just brought a Welsh sec d x heavy cob he turned 1 this may 2022.

He currently stands at 13.3hh which I was thinking is quite big! I have been advised he will grown a hand in a year then another 2 hands after that. This would make him 16.3hhs! Surely this can’t be correct!

Anyone out there that could offer any advice in terms of predicted finishing height for a sec d?

Mum is 15.2 dad 15.3

Thank you 😊

Do the string test to estimate adult height, take a string from ergot to elbow, then keep your place and hold it elbow upwards, where it ends will be roughly the final height (because leg length has reached 95-100% of final height by a year old).

My Welsh d cross I bought as a just barely 2 year old and he was about 14.2 or 3, and now as a just 4yo he’s 15.1 or 2, I don’t expect much more height from him.
My mare (not Welsh but it doesn’t make that much difference) was 14.2 at 18 months old and was 15.1 by 4yo (and stayed there/is now 19).

With the height of his parents I'd be a bit surprised if he made 16.3 unless one of them has a record of throwing big stock, but buying youngsters is always a gamble - Jim made a lot bigger than either parent.

There's no upper height limit on Welsh Ds and a few studs deliberately breed for 16hh and above..

Are you sure that the person who told you that didn't mean that he would grow a hand in a year and then 2 inches after that? Horses generally do the majority of their growing in the first 2 years. I have never known a horse to grow 2 hands between aged 2 and 4.

I have, but then I grew up around the old type IDs and they're slow to mature, it wasn't unusual for a relatively slight 14.2 2yo to turn into a 17hh moving mountain.

Wow, best I don't buy a 2 year old pony with the view that it won't grow much then! I don't have much experience with youngsters although I often wonder how Baby Pony (who failed the vetting) is growing. He turned 4 in May and was about 14.1hh when I viewed him in February. I wonder how big he will get? I guess I will never know.

My Ben didn't stop growing until he was 8.
