Hi,
I might be able to afford a horse after a few or so months and therefore I have a question for those who own horses and live in the United States.
I have asked my riding instructor but she can't really give me a straight answer. I want to know: how much money should I save and when I reach this certain amount or around that amount, will let me know that I can go ahead and start looking for a horse and start testing them out, etc.
I need to know the money range to save that will let me know this. I don't mean how much should I save for the horse price in general, I am talking about the overall price for ownership of a horse. I know how much "our" farrier costs for shoes and for barefeet horses (as I have met the farrier and have asked my instructor how much she pays for the horses and stuff - she owns two). I know how much the hay and feed she uses and how much board there is. I plan to stall board which is full board at this stable where my instructor is. It isn't far from my house and I know she takes very good care of the horses etc.
I just want a money range of how much I should save (don't get me wrong I plan to continue to save even after I reach this amount) but I need to know what amount range lets you relax a little and kind of reassures you that you can get a horse now and not really worry about the money. I want to be able to last for a while without money problems and since I will be boarding instead of keeping it at my place, i know it will be cheaper. I think this because I won't have to pay to build up the place with a barn, fence, etc. But,
just dont get confused when you read this....i think my instructor got confused when I asked.. I don't mean how much for the horse (as in paying for the horse and thats it) i mean the money amount in general to pay for a horse on a yearly basis. I know its like over $2000 (keep in mind also that I plan to get one not more than one). I will add the total of stuff I think I would buy if i was getting a horse now (u know like supplies halter, lead rope, saddle/bridle, etc...) maybe that will help also.
Thanks to all who have read this and thank you to those who reply.
