I just moved my horses to a new barn just a couple miles down the road (yay!) and though they are on pasture board the barn owners have said that if it gets below 0F they will put all the horses in stalls at night. My two have been out 24/7 for their lives so if they don't get stalled at night when it's cold I'm not too concerned.
But this does pose a training issue if either of my horses ever need to be in a stall for any period of time for injury and such. So I plan to acclimate them to a stall whenever I get a chance.
Does anyone have any suggestions for methods to do this? I put Axel in a stall for a few minutes today and he promptly kicked all of the shavings out into the aisle.
My plan of action right now I think is to put him in the stall to groom him, maybe give him a treat when he goes in. Just keep putting him in when I'm going to be there doing things. Possibly work up to putting one horse in the stall while I'm riding the other and vice versa (after we get over our new barn herd boundness).
